FAQ

Can I use my debit card or only credit cards?

Both work. Debit cards with Visa or Mastercard logos are the most reliable. Credit cards work but cash advance fees apply — check your card terms before using a credit card for cash withdrawals.

Do Chinese ATMs work 24/7?

Most urban ATMs operate 24/7. ATMs inside bank branches are only accessible during banking hours (typically 9:00–17:00). Standalone street ATMs and those in ATM lobbies (separate glass rooms beside the bank) are available 24/7.

Will my contactless card work at Chinese ATMs?

Most Chinese ATMs require physical card insertion. Contactless ATM withdrawals are not widely supported. Always carry a physical card.

Can I withdraw US dollars or euros from Chinese ATMs?

Some Bank of China ATMs in major cities dispense foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY), but only to Bank of China account holders. Foreign cardholders can only withdraw RMB (¥).

What exchange rate do Chinese ATMs use?

ATMs use the UnionPay or Visa/Mastercard wholesale exchange rate, which is close to the mid-market rate. It is typically 0.3–0.5% off the mid-market rate, far better than airport or hotel exchange counters.

Should I bring US dollars as backup?

Bring US$200–300 in crisp, new notes as an emergency backup. You can exchange these at any Bank of China branch if your cards fail. Do not rely on this as your primary cash strategy — ATM withdrawals offer better rates.

Can I use Western Union or MoneyGram in China?

Western Union is available at China Post (中国邮政) branches and some ICBC branches. Fees are high and the process is slow. Only use as a last resort if you lose all your cards.

Is it safe to use ATMs in China at night?

China is generally very safe, and ATM theft is rare. Use ATMs inside bank ATM lobbies (glass rooms with card-access doors) rather than isolated street machines. Standard urban safety awareness applies.
