What are the Mogao Caves?
The Mogao Caves (莫高窟, also called the Thousand Buddha Grottoes) are 735 Buddhist cave-temples carved into a cliff face on the Silk Road, 25km southeast of Dunhuang. Construction began in 366 AD and continued for 1,000 years. The caves house 2,000+ Buddhist sculptures and 45,000m² of murals, making it one of the world's largest Buddhist art collections. UNESCO site since 1987. Tickets are ¥238 and include a 20-minute digital film before a guided 30-minute visit (only 8-10 caves open to the public at a time, to preserve the murals).
How do I get to Dunhuang?
Fly into Dunhuang Mogao International Airport (DNH) — direct flights from Beijing (3 hours), Shanghai (4 hours), Xi'an (2.5 hours), and Lanzhou (1.5 hours). Alternatively, the high-speed rail from Lanzhou to Dunhuang takes 5-6 hours. The classic Silk Road route is to fly or train into Dunhuang, then continue east to Jiayuguan, Zhangye, and Lanzhou (or reverse).
How many days do I need in Dunhuang?
2-3 days. Day 1: Mogao Caves (morning, 4 hours including the film) + Dunhuang Museum (afternoon). Day 2: Mingsha Mountain + Crescent Moon Spring (sunset is best) + Dunhuang Night Market (evening). Day 3 (optional): Yumen Pass + Yardang Geopark (full day, 4-5 hours each way).
Should I do the Silk Road tour from Dunhuang?
Yes — Dunhuang is the classic starting point for a Hexi Corridor Silk Road tour. The typical 5-7 day route: Dunhuang → Jiayuguan (Great Wall's western end, 4 hours by train) → Zhangye (Danxia Rainbow Mountains, 2 hours) → Wuwei → Lanzhou. Trains are efficient; private car tours are more flexible. The journey covers 1,200km of Silk Road history.
Can I see the singing sand dunes at sunset?
Yes — the Mingsha Sand Dunes are spectacular at sunset. The "singing" comes from the fine sand grains sliding down the dune faces. The best experience: arrive 2-3 hours before sunset, climb the dunes (30-45 minutes), then watch the sunset from the top. Camel rides are popular (¥100, 30 minutes). Stay until dark for the moonlight on the dunes and the lit-up Crescent Moon Spring.
