TL;DR

Mount Emei (峨眉山, 3,099m) is one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and pairs naturally with the Leshan Giant Buddha — both are 1–1.5 hours from Chengdu by HSR. Most travelers do a 2-day trip: Day 1 Leshan Buddha in the morning, drive or HSR to Emei town, Baoguo Temple area in the afternoon. Day 2 cable car to Jinding (Golden Summit) for the famous sunrise (or sunset if sunrise is too cold), back down. The mountain is famous for mischievous wild monkeys — bring a stick and do not carry visible food.

How do I see the sunrise from Jinding?

Stay overnight at one of the two summit hotels (Jinding Hotel or Jinding Xiaozhuang — book 2–3 weeks ahead, ¥600–1,500/night) or at the Leidongping Hotel just below the cable car upper station. Wake at 4am and walk (or take the ¥10 internal shuttle) to Jinding for sunrise at 5:30–6:30am. Winter sunrises (Dec–Feb) are most reliable and the most dramatic with snow. Summer has a 50% cloud-cover rate.

Are the monkeys dangerous?

Mildly. Macaques at the Qingyin Pavilion and along the Jieyin-to-Jinding path are habituated and will grab visible food, plastic bags, water bottles, sunglasses, and anything shiny. Carry a walking stick (vendors sell for ¥5), do not eat in their path, and do not turn your back on them. The temple area and cable car zones are monkey-free.

3,099m summit with a golden statue of Samantabhadra and the famous "sea of clouds" sunrise. Cable car from Jieyin Hall (¥120 up, ¥60 down).

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need?
Two days, one night. Day 1: Leshan Buddha morning, Emei base afternoon, stay in Emei town or Baoguo area. Day 2: cable car to Jinding for sunrise (or sunset if you do not want the 4am wake-up), back down to Chengdu. Three days adds a mid-mountain hike to Qingyin Pavilion.
Can I do it as a day trip from Chengdu?
Tight but possible. Earliest HSR to Leshan (7:30am), Buddha 1.5h, then HSR or bus to Emei, cable car up and down. The sunset is doable but the sunrise is not — you would need to skip the early HSR.
What is the best season?
April–May (azaleas bloom) and September–November (clear autumn, stable weather). December–February has snow at the summit and the most reliable sunrises; bring serious cold-weather gear. June–August is hot and rainy; the sea of clouds is dramatic but rain obscures sunrises.
Should I stay in Emei town or on the summit?
Emei town (Baoguo area) for one night is the practical base — cheaper hotels, more restaurant options, easier logistics. Summit hotel only if you are committed to the sunrise. Most travelers regret summit stays because of the 4am alarm and thin walls.
