Hepeng Cove (Butterfly Valley) (蝴蝶谷, Húdiégǔ)

Hepeng Cove (蝴蝶谷) is a secluded beach area 30 kilometers south of Sanya, named for the butterfly sanctuary in the forested hills behind the beach. The cove is smaller and less developed than Sanya's main beaches, with crystal-clear water, colorful coral reefs close to shore, and a small pocket of white sand. The butterfly sanctuary (蝴蝶泉) in the hills behind the beach houses dozens of tropical butterfly species in a netted garden environment. It is the best beach near Sanya for snorkeling due to the proximity of the reef to the shore.

What to expect

The butterfly sanctuary (蝴蝶泉) is located in the forested hills behind the beach, a 10-minute walk up a stone path through tropical vegetation. The sanctuary is a net-covered garden approximately 1,000 square meters in size, planted with flowering plants that attract dozens of tropical butterfly species. Visitors can walk through the garden and observe the butterflies up close. The sanctuary was established to protect the local butterfly population and to provide an educational experience — it is one of the few places in Hainan where butterflies can be reliably observed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hepeng Cove worth visiting?

Yes — if you want the best snorkeling near Sanya and don't want the crowds of the main beaches. The reef is accessible 30 meters from shore, making it ideal for snorkelers of all levels. The butterfly sanctuary adds a second attraction. Budget a half-day.

Is the water at Hepeng Cove clearer than at Yalong Bay?

Yes — the cove is more sheltered and the reef is closer to shore, meaning less sediment stirred up by swimmers. Underwater visibility can reach 8–10 meters in the early morning, which is significantly better than at Yalong Bay.

Is Hepeng Cove wheelchair accessible?

No. The path to the beach involves some uneven terrain and the beach itself is sand. The butterfly sanctuary requires a 10-minute walk up a stone path. Neither is accessible for wheelchair users.

Can I see butterflies at any time?

The butterfly sanctuary is best visited in the morning (9:00–11:00) when butterflies are most active. Butterflies are less active in the afternoon heat. The sanctuary is a net-covered garden — butterflies are present year-round but species vary by season.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel here?

No — the reef begins 30 meters from shore in chest-deep water, so even non-swimmers can get close to the coral by wading. However, a life jacket is recommended for those who are not confident in the water.
