Yalong Bay (亚龙湾, Yàlóng Wān)

Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) is Sanya's most celebrated beach — a 7-kilometer crescent of fine white sand backed by a ridge of forested hills, with clear aquamarine water that is among the clearest in China. The bay is lined with five-star resorts (Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, Hyatt) whose private beach sections compete with the public areas. It is consistently rated the best beach in Hainan and one of the finest in China. The water is warm year-round (24–29°C) and suitable for swimming 10 months of the year.

What to expect

Yalong Bay is a natural crescent bay on the southern coast of Hainan Island, formed by a ridge of forested hills that shelters the water from strong ocean currents and keeps the bay calm and clear. The bay's white sand is composed of finely ground coral fragments — a product of the coral reefs that once surrounded the bay and still exist beneath the water's surface. These reefs make Yalong Bay an excellent snorkeling and diving destination: the water is clear enough to see coral formations at 5–10 meters depth, and tropical fish are abundant.

The bay's natural beauty attracted international hospitality brands starting in the 1990s, and today the entire bay frontage is occupied by five-star resorts, with the public beach area squeezed into the center. The resorts have developed their private beach sections into manicured tropical gardens with pools, bars, and restaurants. The public beach area at the center of the bay is free and open to all — it is well-maintained and has basic facilities (toilets, showers, rental chairs). The contrast between the resort-exclusive areas and the public beach is striking but not hostile.

The water is warm and calm year-round, making Yalong Bay suitable for swimming in every season. November through April is the peak tourist season — the weather is dry and sunny, and the sea is flat and transparent. The summer months (June–August) are hot (35°C+) with afternoon thunderstorms, though these clear quickly. Underwater visibility is best from January to April.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yalong Bay free to enter?

The public beach section is free. Some resorts charge ¥100–200 for day-passes to their private beach and pool areas. Water sports cost extra (¥150–400 depending on activity).

Is Yalong Bay better than Dadonghai?

Yalong Bay has finer sand, clearer water, and a more pristine setting. Dadonghai is closer to central Sanya and cheaper. For a first visit to Sanya, Yalong Bay is the better beach experience. Dadonghai is better for budget travelers who don't need the premium resort environment.

Is Yalong Bay suitable for children?

Yes — the water is calm, warm, and shallow for a long distance from shore. Many resorts have kids' clubs and family pools. The public beach has lifeguards on duty during daylight hours.

When is the water clearest at Yalong Bay?

January to April, when the sea is calmest and underwater visibility can reach 8–10 meters. The summer months (June–August) have more suspended sediment in the water, reducing clarity.
