Is 3 weeks too long for China?
No — it is the right length for travelers who want to see the full sweep. Three weeks lets you add Yunnan (a region most 7-10 day trips skip) without feeling rushed. It is the recommended length for travelers who can take extended time off.
Is Yunnan worth the detour?
Yes for first-timers. Dali and Lijiang are unique — Naxi culture, 5000m mountains, Erhai Lake — and you cannot get this experience anywhere else in China. Skip Yunnan if you only have 10-14 days.
Do I need a separate visa for Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong has its own immigration from mainland China, but most Western passport holders get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Mainland 30-day visa-free does not include HK. You can fly Shanghai → Hong Kong on the same trip.
How much altitude is too much at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?
The cable car reaches 4500m. People with heart conditions, severe altitude sensitivity, or who are pregnant should not go. Most healthy travelers are fine but pace yourself, drink water, and avoid alcohol the night before.
