A Beijing-Shanghai trip takes 4.5 hours by rail versus 5-6 hours door-to-door by air. Trains offer better comfort, free movement, and no luggage restrictions.
When Flights Make Sense
Flying becomes advantageous for routes over 1500km, destinations in western China without HSR (Tibet, Lijiang, Urumqi), or when flight prices drop significantly. Some routes like Shanghai-Chengdu or Beijing-Kunming are simply too long for practical rail travel despite the network's reach.
Booking Considerations
Foreign travelers often find booking flights easier through international platforms like Trip.com. HSR booking through the official 12306 app can be challenging with foreign passports. Third-party apps streamline both and accept foreign payment methods.
