G-class HSR from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East: 45 min, ¥73 second class. Runs every 15-30 minutes. Book via Trip.com or 12306.
When is West Lake best?
March-April for cherry blossoms. October-November for fall colors. Avoid Chinese national holidays — West Lake is one of the most crowded spots in China during Golden Week.
Should I add Suzhou or Wuzhen?
Suzhou for gardens (UNESCO) and a half-day trip from Shanghai. Wuzhen for a water town overnight (stay in a canal-side inn). With 5 days, you can fit one of these — Suzhou is easier from Shanghai.
