Is Pingyao worth a special trip?
Yes — Pingyao is one of China's most authentic historical experiences. Unlike reconstructed sites (such as Datong's old city), Pingyao's residents still live in the Ming-Qing courtyard homes, and the city has not been overly commercialized. Plan 2 days minimum. Combine with a day at the Wang Family Compound and 1-2 days at the nearby Qiao Family Compound (the location for Zhang Yimou's film "Raise the Red Lantern").
Should I stay inside the Old Town?
Yes — staying inside the walls is the only way to experience Pingyao properly. The Old Town has traditional courtyard hotels (四合院客栈) with prices from ¥150-500 per night. Staying inside lets you see the city wall at sunrise and avoid the day-tripper crowds. The west side of the city is quieter; the south side is closer to the main Ming-Qing Street.
How do I get to Pingyao?
High-speed rail from Beijing to Pingyao Ancient City Station takes 4 hours (¥200-300 second-class). From Xi'an, 3 hours. From Taiyuan (Shanxi capital), 30 minutes. The Pingyao train station is 10km from the Old Town — take a taxi (¥30) or tourist bus (¥5). Fly into Taiyuan Airport (TYN) and take a 1-hour train to Pingyao.
What is the Pingyao combo ticket?
The ¥125 combo ticket covers the city wall, Rishengchang, Qing Void Temple, the city museum, and 20+ other attractions within the Old Town. Valid for 3 days. Most Old Town attractions are included. The combo ticket is excellent value — single attractions are ¥30-80 each. Buy at the south gate or any wall entrance.
Is Pingyao good for photography?
Yes — Pingyao is one of China's best photography destinations. The Ming city wall at sunrise and sunset is iconic. The narrow stone alleys of the Old Town at dusk are atmospheric. The lantern-lit streets during the Chinese New Year lantern festival (元宵节, around February 15) are magical. Photographers should bring a tripod for low-light shots and plan 2-3 days to cover the main angles.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best Pingyao photo spot?
- The south gate at sunrise, looking down over the Old Town. The city wall walk itself, with views of traditional rooftops. Ming-Qing Street (明清街) at night with red lanterns. The Rishengchang courtyard with its brick carvings.
- How long should I stay in Pingyao?
- 2 days minimum. 1 day for the Old Town (city wall, Rishengchang, Qing Void Temple, opera show in the evening). 1 day for the outlying sites (Wang Family Compound + Shuanglin Temple). Add a day for the Qiao Family Compound or a night lantern walk.
- What is the best Pingyao food?
- Shanxi cuisine is one of China's most underrated — wheat-based, with noodles, vinegar, and braised dishes. Must-try: Pingyao beef (平遥牛肉, the most famous local product), Shanxi knife-cut noodles (刀削面), oat noodles (莜面栲栳栳), and Pingyao vinegar (中国四大名醋之一, one of China's four famous vinegars). Try Wenshangchang or Renhechang restaurants for authentic local fare.
- Do I need a guide for Pingyao?
- Helpful but not required. The Old Town is small and walkable. A guide adds value for the Rishengchang (Chinese banking history requires context) and the Wang Family Compound (the family story is fascinating). The city museum is well-signed in English.
- Is Pingyao safe?
- Yes — Pingyao is very safe. Petty crime is rare. The main risks: uneven cobblestone streets (watch your step), traffic at the city gates, and slippery stones in rain. The Old Town's narrow alleys are pedestrian-only after 8 PM.
