TL;DR

The Silk Road is the most distinctive route in China — desert landscapes, Buddhist cave art, and a Uighur cultural layer most travelers miss. The 7-day classic route: Days 1-2 Xi'an (start), Days 3-4 fly to Dunhuang (Mogao Caves + sand dunes), Day 5 drive Dunhuang → Turpan, Days 5-6 Turpan (Flaming Mountains, Jiaohe ruins, Uighur food), Day 7 fly Turpan → Urumqi for the Xinjiang Museum and depart. The 14-day version adds Kashgar (Sunday market, 2-day drive from Turpan or 1.5h flight). Best April-May and September-October. Summer is extremely hot in Turpan (40°C+); winter is sub-zero.

Is the Silk Road safe for tourists?

Yes for foreign tourists in 2026. There are occasional security checkpoints (bring passport) but Turpan, Dunhuang, and Urumqi are safe and welcoming. The far-western border regions (Kashgar area, Pamirs) have additional permit requirements. Avoid the Afghanistan border.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. The Dunhuang sand dunes require some walking in heat. Turpan is very hot in summer. The 6h drive Dunhuang → Turpan is paved but long. No technical hiking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for the Mogao Caves?
No permit, but you MUST reserve tickets online at least 1 week in advance (1+ month for peak season). Only guided tours are allowed inside the caves. Photography inside the caves is restricted.
How do I get from Dunhuang to Turpan?
Drive (6h, paved) or train (overnight, 12h, not recommended) or fly Dunhuang → Urumqi → Turpan (4h total with connection, $250). Most travelers do the drive for the landscape.
Is Kashgar worth adding?
Yes if you have 2-3 extra days. The Sunday market is one of the most authentic in Central Asia, the Id Kah Mosque is centuries old, and the city is a Uighur cultural center. Fly from Turpan (1.5h, $150) — the drive is 18h and not recommended.
Can I do this without a tour?
Dunhuang and Turpan are accessible independently. For Kashgar and remote areas, a tour is highly recommended (and may be required for permit logistics). The 7-day classic is doable on your own; the 14-day Kashgar version is easier with a tour.
