The best view is from the roadside viewpoint, not the ticketed scenic area — stop along the highway for photos. Arrive at sunset for the fire effect.

Grape Valley (葡萄沟, Pútáo Gōu)
An 8-km-long green valley of grape trellises, orchards, and Uyghur villages just east of the city. Over 100 grape varieties are grown here, and from July to October you can pick and eat grapes directly from the vines. ¥75. Tourist-oriented — restaurants and dance performances inside — but the contrast between the lush green valley and the stark desert around it is worth the price of admission. Best in August-September for peak grape season.

Karez Wells Museum (坎儿井博物馆, Kǎn'érjǐng Bówùguǎn)
A museum built around an active section of the Karez irrigation system — the 2,000-year-old network of underground canals, wells, and tunnels that brings Tianshan snowmelt to the Turpan oasis. You can walk through restored tunnel sections and understand the engineering that made desert agriculture possible. ¥40. Fascinating for anyone interested in pre-modern engineering. Allow 1 hour.

Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves (柏孜克里克千佛洞, Bózīkèlǐkè Qiānfó Dòng)
A complex of 57 Buddhist cave temples carved into a cliff face in the Flaming Mountains, dating from the 5th to 14th centuries. Many murals were removed by German and Japanese expeditions in the early 20th century (they are in Berlin and Tokyo now), but the remaining paintings — Buddhas, bodhisattvas, Uyghur donors — are evocative. ¥40. About 45 min east of Turpan by car. Combine with the Flaming Mountains for a half-day loop.

Emin Minaret (苏公塔, Sūgōng Tǎ)
A 44-meter brick minaret built in 1777, the tallest minaret in China. The tapering cylindrical tower is decorated with geometric brick patterns in 15 different designs — no tiles, just extraordinarily skilled brickwork. The attached mosque is still active. ¥30. About 3 km east of the city center. Best photographed in morning light.

Gaochang Ruins (高昌故城, Gāochāng Gùchéng)
A second major Silk Road ruined city, larger than Jiaohe but less well-preserved. Founded in the 1st century BCE and destroyed in the 14th century, Gaochang was a major Buddhist center — the monk Xuanzang (the inspiration for Journey to the West) stayed here in 630 CE on his way to India. ¥70. About 40 km southeast of Turpan. Less visited than Jiaohe and more atmospheric for it.

Aydingkol Lake (艾丁湖, Àidīng Hú)
The lowest point in China at 154 meters below sea level — second only to the Dead Sea globally. It is a salt lake that shrinks dramatically in summer, leaving a white salt crust. The landscape is stark and lunar. Not a scenic highlight but a geographical curiosity — you can say you have been to China's lowest point. ¥30. About 50 km south of the city.
