Is Yunnan worth the detour?
Yes for travelers who have 7+ days. The Kunming-Dali-Lijiang triangle is the best counterpoint to the bigger cities: Naxi culture, 5,000m mountains, Erhai Lake. Skip Yunnan if you only have 7-10 days in China — see the cities first.
Is altitude sickness a problem in Yunnan?
Kunming (1,900m) and Dali (2,000m) are fine for most travelers. Lijiang (2,400m) and especially the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car top (4,506m) can cause mild symptoms. Drink water, skip alcohol the night before, ascend slowly.

Frequently asked questions
- How many days do I need in Yunnan?
- Five days covers the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang triangle. One to two weeks adds Shangri-La (3-4 days), Yuanyang Rice Terraces (2 days), or Xishuangbanna (3-4 days).
- When is the best time for Yunnan?
- Year-round — different regions peak in different seasons. March-May is universally good. June-August is rainy but green. September-November is autumn-clear. December-February can be cold in Lijiang (Jade Dragon has snow) but Kunming stays mild.
- Is it safe to travel in Yunnan?
- Yes — safe for foreign tourists. The main risks are altitude (see above) and occasional road closures in mountain regions in winter. Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang are well-set-up for independent travel.
- Should I visit Shangri-La?
- Yes if you have 2-3 extra days. Tibetan plateau town at 3,200m, home to a 17th-century monastery, yak pastures, and the start of the old Tea Horse Road. Beautiful and culturally distinct from the rest of Yunnan.
