Shaolin Temple (少林寺, Shàolín Sì)

The Shaolin Temple, on Mount Song in Henan Province, is where Bodhidharma (Damo) introduced Chan Buddhism to China in the 6th century and where, according to tradition, Shaolin kung fu was developed by monks who needed physical conditioning to endure long meditation sessions. Today, the temple is part of the larger Dengfeng UNESCO site (8 clusters of ancient buildings). The Pagoda Forest — 228 brick pagodas housing the ashes of past abbots, dating from the Tang to Qing dynasties — is the most atmospheric part of the complex.

What to expect

Shaolin is the most famous martial arts temple in the world, but moderate your expectations: the temple itself is modest, heavily restored, and packed with domestic tourists. The kung fu shows (included in the ticket, 4–5 daily at the Wushu Training Center) are impressive — students as young as 6 demonstrate acrobatics, breaking metal bars on their heads, and complex weapon forms.

The Pagoda Forest (塔林), a 5-minute walk from the temple, is the highlight — a quiet grove of 228 brick stupas (the largest cluster of ancient pagodas in China), each the tomb of a Shaolin abbot, their height and ornamentation reflecting their status and era. The Sanhuang Village trail (via cable car) offers excellent views of Mount Song and is far less crowded than the temple.

How to get there

Bus from Zhengzhou Long-Distance Bus Station to Dengfeng (1.5 hours, ¥30). From Dengfeng, local bus to Shaolin (30 min, ¥5). Or book a day tour from Zhengzhou (¥400–600).

Best photo spots

  • Pagoda Forest — best in late afternoon light
  • Kung fu students training in the courtyards — early morning before the crowds
  • Mount Song's Sanhuang Village overlook — vertical cliff path with mountain panoramas

Tips

  • Check the kung fu show schedule at the entrance (typically 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00)
  • Go to the Pagoda Forest first — it gets crowded after 10:00
  • The temple is not a serene Buddhist experience — it is loud, crowded, and commercial. The kung fu schools around the temple (20+ schools, 50,000+ students) are more interesting than the temple itself.

Scams to avoid

  • Fake "Shaolin kung fu schools" in Dengfeng town offering lessons — they are not affiliated with the temple
  • "Monks" at the entrance selling blessed amulets — real Shaolin monks do not sell souvenirs at the gate

Frequently asked questions

Is Shaolin Temple worth it?

For martial arts enthusiasts: yes, it is the spiritual home of kung fu. For casual tourists: the commercialization can be off-putting. The Pagoda Forest is genuinely atmospheric. The temple itself is modest. Go with managed expectations and combine it with the Longmen Grottoes (Luoyang, 2 hours away).

Can I take a kung fu class at Shaolin?

Yes — several schools around the temple accept foreign students for short-term training (1 day to several weeks). The Shaolin Temple Wushu Training Center is the most reputable. Day classes: ¥200–400. Multi-week programs available. Prepare for intense physical training — this is not a tourist experience.

How do I get to Shaolin Temple?

Nearest major city: Zhengzhou (1.5 hours by bus + local transport). Combine with a Luoyang visit — Luoyang to Shaolin is 1.5 hours by bus. Many travelers visit Luoyang (Longmen Grottoes) and Shaolin in a 2-day trip.

Is Shaolin connected to Bodhidharma?

Yes — the Indian monk Bodhidharma (Damo) arrived at Shaolin in 527 AD and meditated in a cave for nine years. He is considered the founder of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and, according to legend, taught the monks physical exercises that evolved into Shaolin kung fu. The cave (Damo Cave) can be visited on Mount Song above the temple.
