Is Chengde worth a day trip?
Yes — the Mountain Resort (UNESCO) is the largest imperial garden in China (5.6 km²), and the surrounding temples (Puning, Putuo Zongcheng) replicate Lhasa's Potala Palace and Tibet's monasteries.
When is Chengde best?
May-October. The Mountain Resort has summer cooling palaces for the Qing emperors. Winter can be very cold (-20°C).
Is 5 days enough for Beijing + Chengde?
Yes for highlights. You see Beijing's imperial core and a Chengde day trip. Add 1-2 days for a deeper Chengde visit (mountain hiking, temple circuit).
How do I get to Chengde?
HSR from Beijing Chaoyang to Chengde South: 1h 20m, ¥108. Runs 8+ times daily. Bus from Beijing Liuliqiao: 4h, ¥70. The HSR is faster and more comfortable.
