BEFORE YOU GO
Practical Tips for this trip
A handful of things our editors flag for every China itinerary — sorted from 'must do' to 'nice to know'.
Visa and entry documents
Most Western passports get 30-day visa-free entry in 2026. Bring your passport (6+ months validity), a printed hotel reservation, and the return ticket — border agents occasionally ask.
Payment setup
Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly and link a Visa or Mastercard. Cash still works at small shops but mobile pay is the default almost everywhere.
Connectivity
Order a China eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, China Unicom) before departure — the visa-free visitors' data plans are now widely supported and cost under $10 for 5 GB.
How we calculated costs
All figures are in USD per person for the full itinerary, not per day. Backpacker assumes hostel + metro + casual meals; mid-range assumes 3-star hotel + occasional taxi; luxury assumes 5-star + private driver.

Budget Breakdown
Per-person totals across the whole trip, in USD. Backpacker assumes hostel + metro; mid-range assumes 3-star hotel + a taxi day; luxury assumes 5-star hotel + private driver. Figures assume a 5-day trip.

OUR PROCESS
How we tested this itinerary
Every itinerary on nihaovisit is walked by at least two editors in real conditions. Here's the method we used for this one.
- Step 01
Two editors walk the route independently
Two of our Beijing-based editors walked this exact 5-day route in March 2026, taking separate transport and meeting only for dinner debriefs. Disagreements go to the third editor for arbitration.
- Step 02
Hotel rates re-checked across 3 OTAs every 7 days
We pull the same Wangfujing room at the same check-in date from Booking, Trip, and Agoda every Monday. If the rate moves more than 8% we re-test in person.
- Step 03
Timed walks under real conditions
We log every transit segment — Forbidden City entry time, Mutianyu cable-car queue, Chengde HSR platform — under peak-season conditions. The itinerary honors those times, not aspirational ones.
- Step 04
Restaurant cost verified in cash, not menu
Peking duck prices vary ¥80-¥280 within 500m of each other. We eat the meal and pay the actual bill, then quote the verified range — not the menu headline price.
- Step 05
Re-published with a 90-day freshness check
Every itinerary is re-tested within 90 days. If a museum closes, a hotel re-brands, or a Chengde train schedule changes, the itinerary is updated and re-numbered (no silent version drift).
