Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for the Mogao Caves?
No permit, but you MUST reserve tickets online at least 1 week in advance (and 1+ month for peak season). Only guided tours are allowed inside the caves. Photography inside caves is restricted.
Is the drive from Dunhuang to Turpan doable?
Yes but long — 6 hours. The road is paved and scenic (Gobi desert, Yardang formations). Alternative: overnight train from Dunhuang to Turpan (12h, not recommended) or fly Dunhuang → Urumqi → Turpan (4h total, $250).
Is it safe to travel in Xinjiang?
Yes for foreign tourists. There are occasional security checks (bring passport) but Turpan and Urumqi are safe and welcoming. Avoid the far-western border regions (Kashgar is fine for groups with permits; the Afghan border is restricted).
What is the best time for the Silk Road?
April-May and September-October. Summer (June-August) is extremely hot in Turpan (40°C+) and Dunhuang. Winter can be very cold (sub-zero in Turpan nights) but you get cheaper prices and fewer tourists.
