Plan 2 days. Day 1 covers Weinan Museum, Tong Pass, and Huanghe River at sunset. Day 2 is for Hua Shan (full day). Add a third day if visiting in spring for the Daliang Temple hiking trails.
Weinan city sites can be done in a long day from Xi'an (20 min by HSR), but Hua Shan is better as an overnight from Weinan rather than a rushed day trip from Xi'an. Stay in Weinan for the Hua Shan experience.
Not recommended for children under 12 or those afraid of heights. The steep paths, the plank walk, and the sheer drops make it inappropriate for young children. Teenagers who are fit and unafraid of heights can handle it with adult supervision.
The North Peak cable car is a modern detachable grip lift covering 800m of vertical gain in 8 minutes. The West Peak cable car is longer (1.2 km) and goes to the highest point. Both offer views of the granite peaks. The cable cars operate 07:00-19:00 in summer and 08:00-18:00 in winter.
Wear hiking boots or grippy athletic shoes — the granite paths are smooth and slippery when wet. Layers are essential; the peaks are 8-10°C cooler than the base. Bring sun protection, at least 1 liter of water per person, and snacks. A light windbreaker is useful even in summer.
The plank walk closes in rain, snow, or high wind. The best period is April-June and September-November. Summer thunderstorms can close it suddenly. Check with the Hua Shan tourism office on the day for current conditions.
Allow at least 3 days for the highlights. 4–5 days lets you add nearby sites and a day trip. A week lets you see everything at a relaxed pace.
Golden Week (October 1–7) — domestic tourists travel en masse. Also avoid Spring Festival (late Jan/Feb) and Labor Day (May 1–5). Summer (July–August) is hot, humid, and crowded.
