Transit exemption is free, instant at the border, but limited to ≤240 hours (10 days) and requires an onward ticket to a third country. The L visa costs $140+, takes 4–7 days, but allows 30–60 days anywhere in China.
Which China transit visa exemption should I use?
Use the 240-hour scheme if available at your port — it gives the longest stay (10 days). The 72- and 144-hour schemes were replaced by the 240-hour scheme on 2024-12-17 and no longer operate; only the 24-hour and the 240-hour schemes are currently available.
Can I leave the airport on a transit visa exemption?
Yes — all current transit visa exemptions (24- and 240-hour) let you leave the airport and travel within the specified province(s). You must register at a local police station within 24 hours of arrival at your accommodation.
What happens if I overstay a transit visa exemption?
Severe consequences: fines (¥500/day), detention, deportation, and a 10-year ban from China. Transit overstays are taken very seriously — book your onward ticket with margin.
