Most travelers do 2-3 nights in Kunming (for Stone Forest + city) and 2-3 nights in Dali (for the lake and old town). The HSR between them is 2 hours. Don't skip Dali — it's the most atmospheric city in Yunnan.
How do I get from Kunming to Dali?
HSR from Kunming Station or Kunming South: 2 hours, ¥145 second class. Runs every 20-30 minutes. The high-speed line opened in 2018 and is the most efficient option. Flying is also an option but not faster door-to-door.
Is Kunming worth visiting?
Yes — but mostly as a transport hub and base for day trips (Stone Forest, Dongchuan Red Land). The city itself is modern and not particularly charming. 2 days is enough for Kunming proper; spend more time in Dali, Lijiang, or Shangri-La.
When is the best time for Dali?
