Yes for highlights. You cover the must-see of all three cities. For deeper exploration, add 2-3 days to any city.
How much HSR time is involved?
Two HSR segments: Beijing-Xi'an (4.5h) and Xi'an-Shanghai (6h). Both run multiple times daily. Book via 12306.cn or Trip.com 1-2 weeks ahead.
What is the best order?
Beijing → Xi'an → Shanghai is the standard. It moves from north to south, ending in the most international city for departure. Reverse works equally well.
Should I fly instead of taking HSR?
HSR is faster door-to-door for Beijing-Xi'an (4.5h vs 2h flight + 2h airport time). Xi'an-Shanghai is closer (2h flight + 2h airport time = 4h, vs 6h HSR). HSR is more comfortable and scenic.
