Xianren Cliff (Immortal Cliff) (仙人崖, Xiānrén Yá)

Xianren Cliff (仙人崖, "Immortal Cliff") is a mountain valley area 50 kilometers northwest of Tianshui, known for its forested hillsides, cliff-side Buddhist temples, and a seasonal waterfall that cascades down a granite cliff face after rain. The area is a combination of natural scenery and cultural heritage — Buddhist temples have been established here since the Northern Wei dynasty, and the cliffs contain a series of cave temples similar in spirit to (though smaller than) the Maiji Mountain Grottoes. It is an excellent hiking destination and a quieter alternative to Maiji Mountain.

What to expect

Xianren Cliff (仙人崖, "Immortal Cliff") is a forested mountain valley in the hills northwest of Tianshui, named for the cliff-side caves and temples where Buddhist monks have practiced for over 1,500 years. The area consists of a main valley surrounded by granite hills, with a series of Buddhist temples built into the cliffsides and a seasonal waterfall at the head of the valley. The Buddhist temples date from the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD) through the Ming and Qing dynasties — the oldest cave carvings are among the earliest Buddhist art in Gansu.

Hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the valley, ranging from easy valley-floor walks to more demanding climbs to the upper cliff temples. The highest temple requires a 1-hour climb and offers views over the valley. The area is significantly less developed than Maiji Mountain — there are fewer facilities, fewer visitors, and a more wilderness feel. It is popular with Chinese hikers and photographers but rarely visited by international tourists.

Frequently asked questions

Is the waterfall always flowing?

No — the waterfall is seasonal and dependent on recent rainfall. It is most impressive after rain (July–September). In dry periods (late summer, winter, spring), it may be a trickle or completely dry. Check the local weather before visiting.

Is Xianren Cliff worth visiting if I'm also going to Maiji Mountain?

Yes — if you enjoy hiking and natural scenery. Maiji Mountain is primarily about Buddhist cave art; Xianren Cliff offers natural scenery (waterfall, forested valley) combined with smaller cliff temples. The two sites complement each other and are 30 km apart.

Is Xianren Cliff wheelchair accessible?

No. The valley trails and cliff-side temples are not accessible for wheelchair users.

How difficult is the hiking?

The valley floor trail to the waterfall is easy (30 minutes, flat). The climb to the upper temples is moderate (1 hour, steep in places). Trails can be muddy and uneven. A reasonable level of fitness is needed for the upper trail.

Can I visit both Maiji Mountain and Xianren Cliff in one day?

Yes — with an early start (8:00 AM departure from Tianshui) and a private car/diDi, you can visit both sites in one day. Start at Maiji Mountain (3–4 hours), then drive to Xianren Cliff (30 km, 1 hour), spend 2–3 hours, and return to Tianshui by evening.
