2-Day Guangzhou Itinerary

2-Day Guangzhou Itinerary

TL;DR — Two days in Guangzhou (广州) covers the city's three signature experiences: Canton Tower (广州塔), Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠), and Shamian Island (沙面岛), plus one dim sum morning and one Cantonese dinner. Skip the zoo; the city's strength is food, history, and the Pearl River (珠江) skyline, not wildlife. The plan assumes arrival by morning flight; reduce to Day 1 only if you land after 14:00.

Day 1: Old Guangzhou + Pearl River

Morning (08:30–12:30): Chen Clan + Liwan

  • 08:30 — Metro Line 1 to Chen Clan Ancestral Hall Station (陈家祠站), exit B.
  • 09:00Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠), ¥10 entry. Built 1894, the finest example of Lingnan architecture. 1.5 hours; the wood and stone carving museum is the highlight.
  • 10:30 — Walk 15 min to Liwan Park (荔湾湖公园), the historic Cantonese heartland. Free.
  • 11:00Dim sum at Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家), inside the park. Since 1947. Try the shrimp dumplings (虾饺), siu mai (烧卖), and egg tarts (蛋挞). ¥80-120/person.
  • 12:00 — Walk through Xiguan (西关) old streets, the historic merchant district. The Enning Road (恩宁路) pedestrian zone is the most photogenic.

Afternoon (13:30–17:30): Shamian Island + Pearl River

  • 13:30 — Metro Line 1 to Huangsha Station (黄沙站), then 10-min walk to Shamian Island (沙面岛).
  • 14:00 — Shamian was the foreign concession (1861-1949). 150+ colonial-era buildings; the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel (露德圣母堂) and the Former British Consulate are the highlights. Free, open 24/7.
  • 15:30 — Walk to Pearl River (珠江) at Liu'ersha Wharf (六二三路码头). Optional 30-min river cruise (¥30-80/person) or just walk the embankment.
  • 16:00Cantonese afternoon tea at Taotaoju (陶陶居), founded 1880. ¥100-150/person.
  • 17:30 — Sunset from Haizhu Bridge (海珠桥) pedestrian walkway. Free, panoramic skyline view.

Evening (19:00–22:00): Pearl River Night Cruise + Dinner

  • 19:00Pearl River Night Cruise (珠江夜游), boarding at Tianzi Wharf (天字码头). ¥138-198/person, 70-90 min. The Canton Tower lights up at 19:30 and 21:00.
  • 21:00 — Late dinner at Bingsheng (炳胜), a Guangzhou institution for Cantonese seafood. Try the suckling pig (脆皮乳猪) and steamed fish (清蒸鱼). ¥150-250/person.

Day 2: Modern Guangzhou + Canton Tower

  • 08:30 — Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station (越秀公园站).
  • 09:00Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), ¥5 entry. The Five Rams Statue (五羊石像) is the symbol of Guangzhou; the Zhenhai Tower (镇海楼) on top of the hill is the original 1380 city gate.
  • 10:30Guangzhou Museum (广州博物馆) inside Zhenhai Tower. ¥10, 1 hour.
  • 11:30 — Walk to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street (北京路步行街), a 2,200-year-old road with visible Song/Yuan dynasty pavement under glass. Free.
  • 12:00Lunch at Dayuan (大苑子), Cantonese classics since 1995. ¥60-100/person.

Afternoon (13:30–17:30): Canton Tower

  • 13:30 — Metro Line 3 to Canton Tower Station (广州塔站).
