2 Days in Jinan (济南) — Springs, Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, Thousand Buddha Mountain, Transport & Food
Jinan, the capital of Shandong (山东) province, is nicknamed the "City of Springs" (泉城). Two days is enough to cover the four signature sights — Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, Thousand Buddha Mountain, and the old spring cluster around the old city — plus great local food.
TL;DR
- Best season: April–May and September–October. Spring water levels are highest after summer rains, so August–October is also reliable.
- Pace: Moderate. Two full days, mostly walking plus short taxi/bus hops.
- Estimated budget (per person, mid-range, 2026): ¥700–¥1,100 total, excluding long-distance trains. Breakdown: hotels ¥300–¥500/night, meals ¥80–¥150/day,景点 tickets ¥100–¥160 total, local transport ¥30–¥60/day.
- Currency: Chinese yuan (CNY / ¥). Mobile pay (Alipay 支付宝 / WeChat Pay 微信支付) is standard; carry some cash for tiny stalls.
- Language: Mandarin. Translation apps (DeepL, Google, Pleco) help. Few locals speak English in the old city.
Day 1 — Springs, Old City, Daming Lake
Morning: Baotu Spring Park (趵突泉公园)
Arrive at the south gate (南门) by 7:30–8:00 to beat tour groups. Baotu Spring is one of China's four most famous spring groups and pumps around 20,000 m³ of water a day at peak flow. The park also holds the Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall (李清照故居), dedicated to the Song-dynasty poetess.
- Hours: 7:00–21:00 (last entry usually 20:00). Verify on the official site before travel.
- Ticket: ¥40.
- Transit from Jinan Railway Station (济南站): Metro Line 2 to Beiyuan (北园), then transfer; or taxi 15–20 min, around ¥20.
Lunch: spring-water tofu and braised pork near the park
Eat at one of the small restaurants on Furong Street (芙蓉街), a pedestrian food street 10 minutes' walk east. Look for 油旋 (yóuxuán, "oil spiral" pastry, ¥5–¥8) and 甜沫 (tiánmò, a savory millet porridge, ¥5). A sit-down meal of stir-fried chicken, spring-water tofu, and a vegetable is around ¥60–¥90 per person.
Afternoon: Daming Lake (大明湖)
Walk or take a 5-minute taxi to Daming Lake, a 46-hectare urban lake in the north of the old city. The free outer park opens 24 hours; the paid scenic area (¥30 combo with Chaoran Pavilion 遐园) opens 6:30–19:00. Stroll the Nanqiang Pedestrian Street (南岸) for pagoda reflections, then row a pedal boat (¥40/hour) if weather allows.
Evening: Chaoran Pavilion (超然楼) light-up & Shandong cuisine
Return to the lake at dusk. The 7-story Chaoran Pavilion (超然楼) lights up after dark (free to view from outside). Walk 10 minutes west to Quancheng Road (泉城路) for dinner at a Shandong (鲁菜) restaurant. Try sweet-and-sour carp (糖醋鲤鱼) and Nine-Turn Intestines (九转大肠). Dinner ¥80–¥140 per person.
Day 1 transit total: ¥30–¥50 (taxi + Metro).
Day 2 — Thousand Buddha Mountain, Black Tiger Spring, Old Quarter
Morning: Thousand Buddha Mountain (千佛山)
Take a taxi or bus K64 to Qianfoshan (千佛山) — about 20 minutes from the city center. The mountain has over 130 Tang- to Ming-era stone Buddha statues along the eastern cliff and the Xingguochan Temple (兴国禅寺, ¥20). Cable car up is ¥20, down ¥20, optional if you prefer walking (40 min to the top).
- Park hours: 6:30–18:00 (verify).
- Ticket: ¥30 (park) + ¥20 (temple).
- Allow: 2.5–3 hours.
Lunch: Five Dragon Pool (五龙潭) area
Back in the old city, walk to Five Dragon Pool Park (五龙潭公园, ¥5) — a smaller, quieter spring complex. Lunch at a local Shandong restaurant on Gongqingtuan Road (共青团路). Try sweet-scented osmanthus wine (桂花酒) in winter; otherwise just go for stir-fried river shrimp and a vegetable. ¥60–¥100 per person.
Afternoon: Black Tiger Spring, Pearl Spring & Furong Street
Spend the late afternoon walking a 2-km loop through the Black Tiger Spring (黑虎泉, free), Pearl Spring (珍珠泉, ¥15), and back to Furong Street. You'll see locals collecting spring water with big bottles — a Jinan ritual. The springs are partly underground karst fed by the Jinan aquifer.
Evening: Jinan "chao ji" market snacks
Finish at the Jinan BBQ (济南烧烤) stalls near the Jinan Yaoqiang Airport (济南遥墙国际机场) shuttle drop-off at Daming Lake or local branches around Heping Road (和平路). Lamb skewers (羊肉串, ¥3 each), grilled flatbread (烤烧饼, ¥5), and a Yanjing or Tsingtao beer (¥8) make a cheap, classic night. Dinner ¥70–¥120 per person.
Day 2 transit total: ¥40–¥70.

Etiquette and small print
- Tap water is not drinkable; use hotel kettles or bottled water.
- Many museums and scenic spots require real-name ID (passport) on entry.
- Spring water is safe to rinse hands in but not for drinking untreated.
- Avoid public holiday weeks (May 1–5, Oct 1–7) — the springs get shoulder-to-shoulder.
- Verify opening hours and ticket prices on the official sites of Baotu Spring Park, Daming Lake, and Qianfoshan the week you travel.
