2-Day Kunming Itinerary
TL;DR — Two days in Kunming (昆明) covers the city's three signature experiences: Stone Forest (石林), Western Hills (西山), and Dianchi Lake (滇池), plus one night of Yunnan food. Add the Yunnan Ethnic Villages (云南民族村) if you have an extra half-day. The city sits at 1,892 m altitude with year-round mild weather (15–25°C), earning it the nickname "Spring City (春城)."
Day 1: Stone Forest + Old Town
Morning (07:30–13:00): Stone Forest (石林)
- 07:30 — Depart from your hotel; Kunming Changshui Airport (昆明长水国际机场) is 30 min by metro Line 6; downtown hotels are 15 min from the East Bus Station (东部汽车客运站).
- 07:45 — Bus to Stone Forest from East Bus Station: ¥35, 1.5 hours, departures every 20–30 min. Or taxi for ~¥250.
- 09:30 — Arrive. Ticket ¥130 + electric shuttle ¥25. Real-name required.
- 09:45–12:30 — The Major Stone Forest (大石林) is the famous karst maze — limestone pillars 20–40 m tall, formed 270 million years ago. Allow 2.5 hours; the Ashima (阿诗玛) stone is the must-photograph spot. Wear sturdy shoes; paths are uneven.
- 12:30 — Lunch at the Stone Forest restaurant row: try Yiliang Roast Duck (宜良烤鸭) or Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles (过桥米线).
Afternoon (14:00–18:00): Return + Yuantong Temple
- 14:30 — Bus back to Kunming (~1.5 hours).
- 16:00 — Yuantong Temple (圆通寺), ¥6 entry. The largest Buddhist temple in Kunming, 1,200 years old, set against a hill. 1 hour.
- 17:00 — Walk to Cuihu Park (翠湖公园) (Green Lake), Kunming's downtown park. Locals dance, play chess, and feed seagulls in winter (Nov–March).
- 18:30 — Dinner at Jianxinyuan (建新园): classic Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles since 1906. ¥40/person.
Evening
- 20:00 — Nanping Street (南屏街) pedestrian zone, or Dongfeng Road (东风东路) night market for grilled cheese (乳扇) and Steam Pot Chicken (汽锅鸡).
Day 2: Western Hills + Dianchi Lake
Morning (08:00–13:00): Western Hills (西山森林公园)
- 08:00 — Metro Line 3 to Xishan Park Station (西山公园站), then bus or taxi to the entrance.
- 08:30 — Ticket ¥40 + cable car (龙门索道) ¥40 round trip (the Western Hills are a 2,000-step climb otherwise).
- 09:00–12:00 — Ride up, walk along the cliff path to Longmen (龙门, Dragon Gate) — a series of grottoes carved into a 1,000-m cliff face overlooking Dianchi Lake. The stone-corridor photo spot is the "heart of Yunnan" view.
- 12:00 — Descent by cable car. Lunch at the foot.
Afternoon (13:30–17:30): Dianchi Lake + Yunnan Ethnic Villages
- 13:30 — Taxi to Haiyan Village (海埂大坝), 15 min, ¥30.
- 14:00 — Walk the Dianchi Lake embankment: the largest lake on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau (300 km²). In November–March, red-beaked seagulls from Siberia roost here by the thousands; vendors sell gull food (¥5/bag).
- 15:00 — Cross to Yunnan Ethnic Villages (云南民族村) (¥90). 25 of Yunnan's 26 ethnic minority groups represented in 5 themed villages. 2 hours is enough.
- 17:30 — Return to downtown.
Evening
- 19:00 — Dinner at Fuzhuang Lu (福照楼), a Kunming institution since 1920s. Try Steam Pot Chicken (汽锅鸡), Fried Goat Cheese (炸乳扇), and Wild Mushroom Hot Pot (野山菌火锅) in season (June–October).
- 21:00 — Optional: Dynamic Yunnan (云南映象), the dance show choreographed by Yang Liping. Tickets ¥280–580. Highly recommended.
Practical info
- Airport: Kunming Changshui (KMG) — metro Line 6 to downtown, ¥7, 30 min.
- Hotels: Stay near Dongfeng Square (东风广场) or 翠湖 (Cuihu). Both have metro access and walkable food. Mid-range: ¥350–600/night.
- Best season: March–May, September–November. Avoid July–August (rainy, mushroom season is the only plus). Winters are mild and dry; sunny daytime 15–18°C.
- Altitude: Kunming is 1,892 m. Most travelers feel no effects, but hydrate more than usual the first day.
- What to skip: The "Kunming Old Street" near Jinma Biji arch is mostly modern reconstructions; Cuihu Park and Yuantong Temple give you more of the real Kunming.
