Before You Go

  • Best season: November through March. Avoid Chinese National Day (Oct 1–7) and Spring Festival — hotels triple in price and beaches are packed.
  • Getting there: Sanya Phoenix International Airport (三亚凤凰国际机场, SYX) is 25–40 minutes by taxi (¥60–100) to Yalong Bay or Dadonghai. The new Hainan High-Speed Rail connects SYX to downtown Sanya Station (三亚站) in roughly 15 minutes; a second-class ticket is about ¥15.

Day 1: Yalong Bay & the Rainforest

Morning — Beach at Yalong Bay (亚龙湾)

Yalong Bay is consistently rated China's best beach: 7.5 km of white sand, clear water, and coral offshore. Public beach access is free; sun lounger and umbrella rentals from the resorts run ¥80–150 per set per day.

  • 8:30 — Arrive at the Yalong Bay public beach entrance (亚龙湾公共海滩). Weekday mornings are nearly empty in low season.
  • 9:00–11:30 — Swim, snorkel (mask + snorkel rental ¥30–50 from beach vendors), or just walk the sand. The water is calmest before 11 a.m.

Day 2: Dadonghai, Luhuitou & First Market

Morning — Dadonghai Beach (大东海)

  • 8:30–11:00 — Dadonghai is more developed and crowded than Yalong Bay but the swimming is excellent and there are free public showers and changing rooms on the south end of the beach.
  • Optional add-on: A 20-minute walk or ¥10 e-bike ride north brings you to Xiaodonghai (小东海), a smaller, quieter cove popular with photographers.

Afternoon — Luhuitou Scenic Area (鹿回头风景区)

  • 12:00 — Lunch at A Er Leng Snacks (阿二冷饮/阿二小吃) near the beach for Hainan rice noodles (海南粉, ¥15–25) and pandan cake (斑斓糕).
  • 1:30 — Take a Didi to Luhitou Park (¥15 from Dadonghai). Entry is ¥42; the park closes at 10 p.m. in peak season and 9 p.m. in low season — verify current hours on the official site before travel.

Practical Tips

  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a rash guard are essential. UV index hits 11+ from April to August.
  • Tap water: Don't drink it. Bottled water (瓶装水) is ¥2–5 in convenience stores.
  • Language: English is limited outside the international resorts. Download Pleco dictionary and offline Google Translate for menus.
  • Hainan duty-free: Sanya International Duty-Free City (三亚国际免税城) is the largest duty-free mall in the world, but it needs 3–4 hours — skip it on a 2-day trip unless shopping is the main goal.
  • Refund/tax-free shopping: Foreign passport holders can claim an 11% VAT refund on qualifying purchases — bring your passport and request the form at checkout. Check current rules on the official Sanya tax-refund site before you shop.
