2-Day Suzhou Itinerary

TL;DR — A 2-day Suzhou (苏州) plan: Humble Administrator's Garden + Pingjiang Road + Lion Grove on Day 1, Net Master Garden (with night Pingtan opera) + Lingering Garden + canal-side old town on Day 2. Add Suzhou Museum (I.M. Pei, free) if timed right. Buy all garden tickets 1 day in advance on Trip.com, the museum 7 days ahead on WeChat.

Pre-trip checklist (do 1 week before)

  • [ ] Suzhou Museum tickets (free, timed): book 1–7 days ahead on the Suzhou Museum WeChat mini-program "苏州博物馆". Currently 4,000 tickets / day. 30-min slots.
  • [ ] Humble Administrator's Garden tickets (90 CNY peak / 70 CNY off-peak): book on Trip.com, Meituan (美团), or the official site.
  • [ ] Lingering Garden tickets (55 CNY): same.
  • [ ] Net Master Garden night ticket (100 CNY, includes Pingtan opera 19:30–22:00): book in advance — limited to 200 / night.
  • [ ] Train tickets from Shanghai: 12306.cn, 39–45 CNY second class from Hongqiao, 25–30 min.
  • [ ] Hotel: stay near Pingjiang Road 平江路 or Guanqian Street 观前街 for walkable access.

Day 1: The Classic Gardens

07:30 — Suzhou noodle breakfast

  • Auntie Guan 阿姨 or any local noodle shop: Sao Mian 奥灶面 (Suzhou noodles) or Yangchun noodles 阳春面, 15–25 CNY.
  • Song He Lou 松鹤楼 (the original 1920s) for a more elaborate breakfast: soup dumplings (灌汤包), sweet porridge (糖粥), 30–50 CNY.

09:00 — Humble Administrator's Garden 拙政园

  • Arrive 09:00 sharp — the garden opens 07:30 (summer) / 08:00 (winter), and 09:00 is the earliest the tour-bus crowd arrives.
  • The route: 50 min in the main hall complex, then the eastern pond, then the western bamboo grove.
  • Highlight: the Mid-Hill Pavilion 待霜亭 view in autumn (霜降 October–November).
  • Self-guided audio: 20 CNY, recommended.
  • 2 hours.

11:30 — Suzhou Museum 苏州博物馆

  • 2-min walk from the Humble Administrator's Garden north gate.
  • I.M. Pei (贝聿铭) design, the most beautiful museum in China.
  • 1–1.5 hours. Free.

13:00 — Lunch on Pingjiang Road 平江路

  • Pingjiang Road is a 1,600-m canal-side pedestrian street.
  • Lunch options:
    • Song He Lou 松鹤楼 (Pingjiang branch): 80–120 CNY / person, classic Suzhou cuisine.
    • Zhu He Yuan 竹和苑: 60–100 CNY / person, local favourite.
    • Small dumpling shops: 20–30 CNY, walk-in.

14:30 — Lion Grove Garden 狮子林

  • 10-min walk north of Pingjiang Road.
  • 30 CNY off-peak, 40 CNY peak.
  • Famous for the rockery (500-year-old limestone formations designed to look like 9 lion brothers). Allow 1 hour.

16:00 — Pingtan Tea House 评弹茶馆

  • Pingtan opera 评弹 is the local storytelling art form, Suzhou-style, often with the pipa (琵琶) and sanxian (三弦).
  • Best venues:
    • Pianyufang 琵琶语评弹茶馆 (in Pingjiang Road): 80–120 CNY / person, English menu, 1 hour performance.
    • Suzhou Pingtan Museum 苏州评弹博物馆 (free, 30-min shows twice daily).
  • Highly recommended for first-timers.

18:00 — Dinner: Suzhou cuisine

  • Zhu He Yuan 竹禾苑: 80–150 CNY / person, modern Suzhou.
  • Xie Xuan 谢宴: 100–200 CNY / person, traditional.
  • Must try: Sweet & sour mandarin fish 松鼠桂鱼, osmanthus pork 桂花肉, silky tofu 豆腐花.

20:00 — Canal Night Walk

  • Pingjiang Road is beautiful at night with the canal lit.
  • Shantang Street 山塘街 is the larger and more famous canal street, 3.6 km long, dating to 825 AD.
  • Both are free, 1-hour walk.

Day 2: Master of the Nets + Lingering

08:00 — Suzhou-style breakfast

  • Sugar porridge 糖粥 at any small shop: 8 CNY.
  • Dianxi Xiaolong 鼎祥小笼: steamed soup dumplings, 12 CNY / basket.

09:00 — Net Master Garden 网师园 (day visit)

  • 40 CNY.
  • The smallest of the major gardens, but the most "Chinese". 0.5 hectares, dense composition.
  • 1 hour.

10:30 — Couple's Retreat Garden 沧浪亭

  • 20 CNY.
  • A different style — built around a lake, more open, more poetic.
  • 1 hour.

12:00 — Lunch: Tongde Lou 同得兴

  • Suzhou noodles, the best of the city's noodle shops.
  • 30–50 CNY / person.

14:00 — Lingering Garden 留园

  • 45–55 CNY.
  • The 4th UNESCO garden, 4 hectares, famous for the Gele Peak 冠云峰 (a 6.5-m-tall single rock, the largest in any classical Chinese garden).
  • 1.5 hours.

16:00 — Pan Gate 盘门

  • 25 CNY, ancient water-and-land gate complex from the Song dynasty, 1 hour.
  • Optional, skip if tired.

17:30 — Pre-dinner tea

  • Biluochun tea house 碧螺春: 30–50 CNY / cup, the local tea is one of China's top 10.

19:00 — Dinner at Net Master Garden (night visit)

  • Net Master Garden night visit 100 CNY, includes the 19:30 Pingtan opera in the garden (you sit in the inner courtyard, traditional seating, lanterns).
  • This is the single best Suzhou evening experience — book ahead, limited capacity.
  • 2.5 hours.

22:00 — Back to hotel

Budget

  • Accommodation (2 nights): 600–1,200 CNY (mid-range), 1,500–3,000 CNY (upscale).
  • Tickets: ~300 CNY / person.
  • Food: 200–400 CNY / person.
  • Transport in-city: 50–100 CNY / person (Didi / metro).
  • Total per person: ~1,200–2,000 CNY (mid-range, 2 days).

Day trip alternative from Shanghai

If you have only 1 day from Shanghai:

  • 07:00 train from Hongqiao.
  • 08:00 arrival Suzhou.
  • 08:30 Humble Administrator's Garden + Suzhou Museum (4 hours total).
  • 13:00 lunch on Pingjiang Road.
  • 14:30 Lion Grove Garden (1.5 hours).
  • 16:00 Net Master Garden (1.5 hours).
  • 18:00 dinner on Pingjiang Road.
  • 20:00 train back to Shanghai.

It works, but you will be tired. 2 days in Suzhou is better.

Common mistakes

  • Don't go on a Monday — many museums and some gardens are closed.
  • Don't miss the Pingtan opera — it's the cultural highlight of Suzhou.
  • Don't skip the Suzhou Museum — 1.5 hours, free, beautiful.
  • Don't pay for a "guided tour" at the Humble Administrator's Garden gate — 200 CNY for a 90-min walk. The 20 CNY audio guide is enough.
  • Don't eat in Shantang Street restaurants — they are tourist traps, 2x the price of the same food elsewhere.

Verdict

Day 1 (Humble Administrator's + Suzhou Museum + Lion Grove + Pingtan) + Day 2 (Net Master + Lingering + Pan Gate + night Pingtan) is the right 2-day plan for first-timers. Add a 3rd day for Tongli water town 同里 (45 min from Suzhou) if budget allows.
