3-Day Guangzhou Itinerary

TL;DR — Three days in Guangzhou (广州) covers the Canton Tower skyline, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠), Shamian Island (沙面岛), Beijing Road pedestrian street, and at least one Cantonese dim sum morning plus a Shunde food detour. Guangzhou is China's food capital — the itinerary tilts heavily toward eating. Total mid-range cost: ~¥1,800–2,400 per person (excl. hotel).

Day 1: Old Canton + Riverfront skyline

Morning (08:00–13:00): Chen Clan + Yuexiu Park

  • 08:00 — Metro Line 1 to Chen Clan Temple Station (陈家祠站), exit D.
  • 08:30Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠), ¥10 entry. Built 1888–1894 by the Chen family clan, the finest example of Guangdong architectural sculpture: woodcarving, stone carving, brick carving, ceramics, and metalwork. Allow 1.5 hours. The Guangdong Folk Art Museum (广东民间工艺博物馆) is housed inside.
  • 10:00 — Walk 10 min or 1 metro stop to Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), ¥5 entry.
  • 10:15 — The Five Rams Statue (五羊石像) — the symbol of Guangzhou, dating to a 200 BC myth. Zhenhai Tower (镇海楼, ¥10) is the 5-story Ming-era city museum with city views. Allow 1.5 hours.
  • 12:30 — Lunch at Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家), a 1947 lakeside institution famous for Cantonese morning tea (早茶) and dim sum. Try har gow (虾饺), siu mai (烧卖), cheung fun (肠粉), Phoenix claws (凤爪).

Afternoon (14:00–18:00): Shamian Island

  • 14:00 — Metro to Huangsha Station (黄沙站), exit F. 10 min walk.
  • 14:30Shamian Island (沙面岛), free. A 1 km² sandbar that was the British and French concession from 1861 to 1946. 150+ European colonial buildings (Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical) — the best-preserved concession architecture in China. Walk it in 1.5 hours. Highlights: Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel (露德圣母堂), Customs House (海关大楼), the British Consulate garden.
  • 16:30 — Cross the Pearl River (珠江) via the People's Bridge (人民桥) for skyline photos of Pearl River New Town.
  • 17:00Sacred Heart Cathedral (石室圣心大心教堂), free, 30 min. Guangzhou's 1863 Gothic Revival cathedral, modelled on Notre-Dame.

Evening (18:30–22:00): Canton Tower + Pearl River night cruise

  • 18:30 — Metro to Canton Tower Station (广州塔站), Line 3.
  • 19:00Canton Tower (广州塔) at sunset. Entry to the 488 m observation deck: ¥150. The "Bubble Tram" (摩天轮, ¥298) is a 16-minute horizontal Ferris wheel on top. 450 m Sky Drop is the world's highest free-fall ride.
  • 21:00 — Walk to Tianzi Wharf (天字码头) or Daxin Wharf (大新码头) for a Pearl River night cruise (珠江夜游), ¥80–150, 70 min. The Canton Tower, Liede Bridge, and Haixinsha (海心沙) lit up are the famous skyline view.

Day 2: Cantonese food deep-dive

Morning (07:00–11:00): Dim sum at a heritage tea house

  • 07:00Lian Xiang Lou (莲香楼), Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居), or Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) for the classic morning tea. Walk in around 7:30 AM to skip the 9–11 AM weekend queues. Order: har gow, siu mai, char siu bao (叉烧包), chicken feet in black bean sauce, rice porridge (粥). Budget ¥80–150 per person.
  • 10:30 — Walk to Beijing Road (北京路), free pedestrian street. 2,200 years of history under glass floors — the Song-Yuan dynasty road layers are visible through clear panels. Dafo Temple (大佛寺) next door is a Buddhist temple from 1665.

Afternoon (13:00–18:00): Cantonese culture

  • 13:00Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King (南越王墓博物馆), ¥12. The 2,000-year-old tomb of Zhao Mo, second king of Nanyue (a kingdom that encompassed Guangdong + parts of Vietnam and Guangxi). Jade burial suit, gold seals, bronze artifacts — one of China's most important archaeological sites. Allow 2 hours.
  • 15:30Liwan Museum (荔湾博物馆) or Lingnan Impression Park (岭南印象园), a folk culture park. Skip if rushed.
  • 17:00Huaisheng Mosque (怀圣寺), free, 30 min. The oldest mosque in China, founded in 627 AD by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas during the Tang Dynasty. Active worship site.

Evening (18:30–22:00): Shunde (顺德) food pilgrimage

  • 17:30 — Take the Guangzhou-Shunde Intercity Rail (广珠城际) from Guangzhou South Station to Shunde Station (顺德站), 30 min, ¥30.
  • 18:30Shunde (顺德) is the culinary capital of Guangdong, 1 hour south of Guangzhou. Dinner at Rong Geng (榕意) or the Daliang food street (大良美食街). Try the Shunde "double skin milk" (双皮奶), whole fish steamed with ginger and scallions (清蒸鱼), stir-fried milk curd (炒牛奶), Phenix claws (凤爪), braised goose (烧鹅).
  • 22:00 — Last train back to Guangzhou, or stay overnight at the Shunde Marriott (顺德万豪), ¥450–700/night.

Day 3: Modern Guangzhou + Shamian evening

Morning (09:00–13:00): Zhujiang New Town

  • 09:00 — Metro Line 5 to Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城), the CBD.
  • 09:30Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆), free, 2 hours. Modern history of Guangdong: Maritime Silk Road, the Canton System, Lingnan culture, 6,000+ years of regional archaeology.
  • 11:30 — Walk to Huacheng Square (花城广场), the central plaza. Photo op with Canton Tower behind.
  • 12:30 — Lunch at Taikoo Hui (太古汇) or IGC Shopping Mall (天汇广场) food court for upscale Cantonese at Dim Dou (点都德), the modern dim sum chain.

Afternoon (14:00–18:00): Baiyun Mountain

  • 14:00 — Metro to Baiyun Park Station (白云公园站), then bus or taxi to Baiyun Mountain (白云山).
  • 14:30Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area (白云山风景区), ¥5 entry. The "white cloud mountain" overlooks the city, 382 m. Take the cable car (缆车, ¥25) to the top for the city view. Allow 2.5 hours. Alternatively, the Moxing Ridge (摩星岭) summit at 360 m is a 30-min walk from the cable car top.
  • 17:30 — Return to city center.

Evening (optional)

  • 19:00Beijing Road (北京路) for the night food market, or Huifu East Road (惠福东路) food street for the local favourite Chao Zhou (潮州) cuisine.
  • 20:30Redtory (红专厂), a converted 1950s soy sauce factory turned art district. Galleries, design shops, cafes. Guangzhou's answer to Beijing's 798.

Practical info

  • Airport: Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) — metro Line 3 to downtown, 45 min, ¥8.
  • Train: Guangzhou South Station is the HSR hub. Shenzhen: 30 min, ¥75. Hong Kong: 48 min, ¥215. Changsha: 2h, ¥315. Shanghai: 6.5h, ¥640.
  • Metro: 16 lines, ¥2–14 per ride. Tap with Alipay or WeChat.
  • Hotels: Stay near Tianhe (天河) or Beijing Road (北京路). Garden Hotel (花园酒店) near Huanghuagang is a classic. Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou is the luxury anchor.
  • Best season: October–December is the gold standard — 18–25°C, dry. March–May is second best. June–September is hot, humid, typhoon-prone — avoid if possible.
  • What to skip: The Guangzhou Zoo is mid-tier. The Changlong (长隆) theme park complex is excellent (¥300–500/day) but only worth a full day if you're a family or a roller-coaster fan.
