3-Day Ningbo Itinerary
TL;DR — A 3-day Ningbo (宁波) plan for first-timers: Day 1 — Old Bund 老外滩 + Tianyi Square 天一广场 + Ningbo Museum. Day 2 — Mount Putuo 普陀山 pilgrimage day trip. Day 3 — Xikou 溪口 (Chiang Kai-shek's hometown) or a 2nd city (Hangzhou 杭州 / Shaoxing 绍兴). Ningbo is a working port, not a tourist-trap city; 3 days is the right amount.
Why Ningbo?
Ningbo is the 3rd-largest port in China (after Shanghai and Shenzhen), one of the first 5 Special Economic Zones in the 1980s, and a 2,000-year-old trading city. For travellers, it is:
- Authentic Chinese port city — not a museum, but a real working city.
- Gateway to Mount Putuo (Buddhist sacred island, 2.5 hours by ferry + bus).
- Hangzhou Bay bridge access — easy side trip to Hangzhou (1 hour by train) or Shanghai (1.5 hours).
- Cuisine — Ningbo is famous for small sweet dim sum, seafood, and Yonggang 甬帮菜 cuisine.
Most first-time visitors skip it. That's a mistake if you have been to Shanghai before and want a "real" Zhejiang city.

Option A: Xikou 溪口 (Chiang Kai-shek's hometown)

- Chiang Kai-shek's Former Residence 蒋介石故居 (50 CNY): the Fenghua-style family compound.
- Xuedou Mountain 雪窦山 (90 CNY, plus 50 CNY cable car): a Buddhist mountain, 1.5 hours.
- 4–6 hours total.
- Honest verdict: mostly for history / Republic-of-China-era buffs. Skippable for most travellers.
Option B: Hangzhou 杭州
- 1 hour by high-speed train from Ningbo, 70 CNY second class.
- Best for: a West Lake (西湖) day trip.
- Day-in-Hangzhou: 10:00 West Lake boat (55 CNY) → 12:00 lunch on Hefang Street 河坊街 → 14:00 Lingyin Temple 灵隐寺 (45 CNY) → 16:00 tea at Longjing village 龙井村 → 18:00 dinner on Hefang Street → 20:00 train back to Ningbo.

- A 30-km² island, 1.5 hours by bus + ferry from Ningbo, 60 km south.
- Less-touristed, 2 beaches, fishing villages, 1-day trip.
Budget
- Accommodation (3 nights): 900–1,800 CNY (mid-range), 1,500–3,000 CNY (upscale).
- Transport: 300–500 CNY / person.
- Tickets: 300–400 CNY / person.
- Food: 300–500 CNY / person.
- Total per person: ~1,800–3,200 CNY (mid-range, 3 days).
Common mistakes
- Don't skip Tianyi Pavilion — the world's oldest private library, 1.5 hours, a must.
- Don't do Mount Putuo on a Sunday — the temples are packed, queues are 1+ hours.
- Don't go to Putuo on a winter weekday if you have flexibility — many smaller temples close, only 3 of the big ones are open.
- Don't confuse "Ningbo" with "Nanjing" — different cities, different provinces.
- Don't drink the water from any non-bottled source — Zhejiang's tap water is generally safe but the locals boil it.
Verdict
3 days is the right amount for first-time Ningbo. Day 1 is city, Day 2 is the Buddhist island (the highlight), Day 3 is a side trip. The side trip choice depends on your interest — Hangzhou for scenery, Shaoxing for literary heritage, Xikou for Chiang-era history.
