3 Days in Qingdao 青岛 — Breweries, Beaches, Old Town, Laoshan & German Heritage
TL;DR
- Best season: May to mid-June and September, when sea temperatures sit around 18–22 °C and the beer festival crowds have not yet peaked. July–August is hot (28–32 °C) and packed.
- Total budget: roughly ¥1,400–2,200 per person for three days, excluding the international flight. About ¥400–600 on hotels (mid-range), ¥250–350 on food, ¥150–200 on transit, ¥200–300 on attractions, plus ¥150–250 on Laoshan transport.
- Pace: moderate. Two full coastal/urban days plus one Laoshan day. Suitable for first-time visitors who want a balance of history, beach, and mountain scenery.
- Getting in: fly into Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport 青岛胶东国际机场 (TAO), or take a G-class high-speed train from Beijing 北京 (~3 h 20 min, ¥314 second class) or Shanghai 上海 (~5 h, ¥432).
Day 1 — Old Town, German Heritage & Tsingtao Beer
Morning: Old Town (Old City 老城区)
Start at St. Michael's Cathedral 圣弥厄尔教堂 on Zhejiang Road, built 1932–1934 in German Gothic style. Entry to the square is free; inside mass viewing is ¥10. Walk five minutes north to the Former German Governor's Residence 德国总督楼旧址 (¥20, closed Mondays — verify with the official site). From there, stroll 10 minutes west to Signal Hill 信号山公园 (¥10) for a 360° city view.
Afternoon: Zhongshan Road & Beer Culture
Take bus #221 or a 15-minute walk south along Zhongshan Road 中山路, lined with 1900s European façades. Lunch at Chun He Lou 春和楼 (est. 1891), a Shandong-cuisine institution — try the braised sea cucumber with green onion (¥80–150 per dish).
After lunch, taxi 10 minutes (~¥20) to the Tsingtao Beer Museum 青岛啤酒博物馆 at 56 Dengzhou Road. The standard ticket is ¥60 and the premium with tasting is ¥90. Allow 1.5–2 hours. The museum is inside the original 1903 German brewery.
Evening: Beer Street
Walk or taxi 8 minutes to Dengzhou Lu Beer Street 登州路啤酒街. Expect a freshly tapped 0.5 L Tsingtao for ¥10–15 and grilled squid for ¥30–50 per skewer. Dinner for two runs ¥150–250. Last metro (Line 2) leaves around 22:30.
Day 2 — Beaches, May Fourth Square & Badaguan
Morning: No. 6 Beach
Take Metro Line 2 to Huiquan Square 会展中心 or bus #26. Spend the morning at No. 6 Beach 第六海水浴场, the cleanest central beach. Sunbed rental is ¥20–40; a swim in the cool East China Sea is free. Lockers at the bathhouse ~¥20.
Afternoon: Badaguan Scenic Area
Walk 10 minutes east to Badaguan 八大关景区, a leafy 1930s villa district known as the "Husband-and-Wife Tree" and the Princess Tower 花石楼 (¥8.5). Lunch at Chuange Yuwang Ge 船歌鱼水饺, famous for mackerel dumplings (¥60–90 per person).
After lunch, taxi 15 minutes (~¥25) to May Fourth Square 五四广场 on the modern eastern coast. The 30 m red "Wind of May" sculpture marks the 1919 May Fourth Movement. From here, walk 20 minutes along the Coastal Promenade 滨海步行道 to the Olympic Sailing Center 奥帆中心, site of the 2008 sailing events.
Evening: Sunset & Seafood
Have dinner near the sailing center — try Hai Di Lao 海底捞 (predictable but reliable) or a local spot such as Hai Xia Zhuang Yuan 海鲜庄园 for clams in garlic, steamed prawns, and a Qingdao-style fried mackerel (¥200–300 for two). Sunset views are best from the Lover's Dam 情人坝 pier.
Day 3 — Laoshan Mountain 崂山
Full day: Laoshan Scenic Area
Take Metro Line 4 to Lushan Jihetang 崂山巨峰站 (about 45 minutes from downtown, ¥7) and transfer to bus #639 to the Yangkou 仰口 or Jufeng 巨峰 entrance. The combined ticket is ¥130 (May–Nov) — verify with the official site as off-season pricing is lower.
Recommended route: Take the cable car up to Jufeng Peak (¥80 one way, or ¥120 round trip) for a 1,133 m summit view. The full loop on foot is 8–10 km and takes 4–5 hours. The Yangkou side is shorter and easier, with the famous "Searching the Immortal" rock.
Lunch on the mountain: Bring snacks or eat at one of the village restaurants near the entrance — bowls of noodles ¥25–40.
Evening: Return & Departure
Descend by 16:00 to catch the metro back. If you still have energy, stop at Taiping Mountain Central Park 太平山中央公园 for the night view of the skyline. Final seafood dinner at Wangjie BBQ 王姐烧烤 on Minjiang Road — grilled oysters ¥10 each, grilled squid ¥30.
Practical Tips
Transit
- Metro: Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 11, and 13 cover the city. A single ride is ¥2–8; a 1-day pass is ¥15. Verify operating hours, as the last train is typically 22:00–22:30.
- Taxis: Flag fall ¥10 for the first 3 km, then ¥2.2/km. Use Didi (滴滴) for English support.
- To Laoshan: Bus #639 from Sifang Long-distance Bus Station or by Didi (~¥120 from downtown).
Where to Stay
- Old Town / Zhongshan Road: walkable to the cathedral and beer museum. Try Qingdao Kuandoo Hotel 青岛宽凳酒店 (~¥350/night).
- May Fourth Square: modern, near the beach. The Westin Qingdao 青岛威斯汀酒店 (~¥900/night) or mid-range Ibis Qingdao 青岛宜必思酒店 (~¥350).
- Badaguan: quiet, leafy. Qingdao Badaguan Hotel 八大关宾馆 (~¥500/night).
Food Notes
- Order seafood by the jin (斤, 500 g) — confirm the price per jin before cooking to avoid surprises.
- Pair meals with Laiwu beer 莱芜啤酒 or Tsingtao IPA for variety.
- Vegetarian options are limited outside hotel restaurants; carry translation cards.
What to Skip
- Underwater World 青岛海底世界 (¥150) — small and dated compared to aquariums in Shanghai or Beijing.
- Polar Ocean World 极地海洋世界 — better for families with small children, but skip if you only have three days.
Essentials
- Currency: ¥1 ≈ €0.13 / US$0.14 (check live rates).
- VPN: Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, and most Western social media are blocked. Download a VPN before arrival.
- Payment: Alipay and WeChat Pay are universal. Foreign cards are accepted at hotels and chain restaurants only.
- Best photo light: early morning at No. 6 Beach (06:00–07:30) and sunset at May Fourth Square.
- Weather check: the sea fog (平流雾) rolls in suddenly in May–June; pack a light layer.
