Practical tips
- Book Suzhou Museum in advance. Free but mandatory reservation. Same-day bookings often fill up.
- Gardens close Mondays (most of them — check before going).
- Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1-7). Gardens and water towns are mobbed.
- Bring a light jacket in spring. April-May mornings are cool (12-18°C).
- Most gardens take 1.5-2 hours — don't try to do more than 2 per day.
- Water towns are a full day trip — pick one, not multiple.
- Suzhou is a food destination. Allow 2 meals a day at proper restaurants, plus snacks.
- Mobile pay is universal. Alipay and WeChat Pay work at every restaurant, shop, and most taxis.
When to skip / add
- Skip in: Late January to mid-February (Chinese New Year), Golden Week (Oct 1-7), August (extreme heat).
- Add if you have 4 days: A 1-night stop in Hangzhou (1.5 hours by HSR) — see West Lake, Lingyin Temple, and Longjing tea fields.
- Add if you have 5+ days: Day 4 in Shanghai (25 min by HSR) for the Bund, Yu Garden, and Shanghai Museum. Or extend to Wuxi (无锡) for the Lingshan Grand Buddha and Taihu Lake.
