5-Day Chongqing Itinerary

TL;DR: Five days is the sweet spot for Chongqing (重庆): enough time for the old-town core, the Yangtze riverfront, the museum cluster, and at least one day trip (Dazu Rock Carvings or Wulong Karst). The city is hilly, hot in summer (35–40 °C, June–August), and best navigated by metro, DiDi (滴滴, ride-hailing app), and the famous monorail through Liziba.

Before You Go

  • Best months: March–May and September–November. Avoid the August peak (Chinese summer holiday) and the Chongqing "fog season" branding in December–February, when visibility can drop below 200 m for days.
  • Visa: Most travelers need a China tourist visa (L-visa) in advance; since late 2024, several European and Asian nationalities qualify for visa-free entry (verify on the official PRC MFA site before booking).
  • Payment: Alipay (支付宝) and WeChat Pay (微信支付) are accepted nearly everywhere. Foreign cards work at chain hotels and big restaurants, but street vendors and small noodle shops are cashless-only — link your Visa/Mastercard to Alipay before arrival.
  • Connectivity: Buy a 7-day China Unicom eSIM (~US$10) on arrival. Chongqing Metro has free Wi-Fi but blocks Google, Instagram, and WhatsApp without a VPN.

Day 1 — Jiefangbei & the Yangtze Riverfront

Morning. Land at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (重庆江北国际机场, T3A/T3B). Take Metro Line 10 to Hongtudi (红土地), then transfer to Line 6 to Jiefangbei (解放碑) — about 60 minutes, ¥7.

  • 9:30 — Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street. The 27.5 m People's Liberation Monument (人民解放纪念碑) anchors the CBD. Free, 24/7.
  • 10:30 — Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道). Single fare ¥20, round-trip ¥30. Lines are brutal on weekends — go before 11:00 or after 16:00. The 5-minute crossing gives skyline views from ~50 m above the river.

Afternoon. Walk 15 min downhill to Hongya Cave (洪崖洞), the 11-story stilt-house complex rebuilt in 2006. Entry is free; internal shops and restaurants open 10:00–22:00. The real photo is from Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) at night (lights on from 19:30).

Evening. Hotpot dinner at Xiaoming Tang (小明老火锅), near Jiefangbei — about ¥80–110 per person for the full pot. Walk back to your hotel along the Raffles City Chongqing (来福士) viewing platforms.

Day 2 — Liziba, Eling & the Old Town

Morning.

  • 8:30 — Liziba Monorail Station (李子坝站). Line 2 passes through a residential tower. Best photo spot is the Liziba viewing platform across the street (free, open all day).
  • 10:00 — Three Gorges Museum (中国三峡博物馆). Free with passport ID, closed Mondays. Allow 2 hours.

Afternoon. Cross the Yangtze by Metro Line 6 to Changshengqiao, then ride the crown-shaped Yangtze River Cable Car variant or take a DiDi to Eling Park (鹅岭公园) — ¥5 entry, panoramic views from 瞰胜楼.

  • Lunch at Hu Ji Xianyu (胡记鲜鱼), Ciqikou branch (see Day 4) — about ¥60 per person.

Evening. Sunset drinks at the InterContinental Fugu infinity bar on the 53rd floor, ¥98+/drink. From here, take Metro Line 1 to Ciqikou (磁器口) for the night market, open until 22:00.

Day 3 — Day Trip: Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻)

The main excursion. 90 km west of the city, the Baodingshan (宝顶山) carvings (Tang & Song dynasties, 9th–13th c.) are a UNESCO site.

  • Transit: Tourist bus from Chenjiaping Bus Station (陈家坪汽车站), 07:00 departure, ~2 hours, ¥55 one-way. Return buses leave Baodingshan at 15:30 and 16:30. Verify current schedules on the Chongqing Tourism website.
  • Entry: ¥115 (combined ticket for Baodingshan + Beishan). Audio guide ¥20.
  • Allow 4–5 hours on site. Hire a guide (¥150–200) — the iconography of the 1,000-arm Guanyin alone warrants explanation.

Back in town by 19:00. Late dinner at Pei Jie Dou Hua (佩姐老火锅), Jiefangbei flagship, ¥100–140 per person.

Day 4 — Ciqikou & the Yangtze Riverside

Morning. Re-visit Ciqikou Ancient Town in daylight. The 1 km flagstone strip dates to the Ming era. Free to walk; small museums (porcelain, tea house) ¥10–20.

  • Try Chen Mahua (陈麻花) sesame twists (¥15/box) and Sichuan-style rice balls (糍粑) from street vendors.

Afternoon. Metro Line 1 to Daping; then Line 2 to Xiejiawan for Chongqing Zoo (重庆动物园). ¥25 entry. The giant panda enclosures were rebuilt in 2022 — best viewed before 11:00 or after 15:00 (cooler hours). Allow 2 hours.

Evening. Take DiDi (~¥40) to Nanbin Road (南滨路) for the skyline view. Dinner at Jiang Bei Jiujia (江北酒家) — Sichuan river-fish specialties, ¥120/person. Stroll the riverside boardwalk back to the metro.

Day 5 — Wulong Karst OR Slow Chongqing

  • Pace yourself. Chongqing steps average 30,000/day for visitors — wear cushioned shoes.
  • Hydrate. Bottled water ¥2 at convenience stores; humidity stays above 70 % year-round.
  • Address apps. Use Baidu Maps (百度地图) or Amap (高德地图) — Google Maps is unreliable inside China.
  • Language. English is rare outside Jiefangbei hotels. Install Pleco (offline Chinese dictionary) before arrival.
  • Hotpot spice levels. Specify 微辣 (wei la, "mild") for the first try; foreigners often underestimate the ma-la (麻辣, numbing-spicy) intensity.
