5-Day Ningbo Itinerary

5-Day Ningbo Itinerary

TL;DR: Ningbo (宁波) is Zhejiang's second city — quieter than Hangzhou, with a deep-water port, Ming-Qing old town, Tianyi Square, and a half-day trip to Putuoshan (普陀山), one of Buddhism's four sacred mountains. 5 days is generous; combine with a 1-2 day side trip to Shanghai (1.5 hours by HSR). Best months: April-May, September-October.

Quick facts

  • Province: Zhejiang (浙江), 220 km south of Shanghai.
  • Status: Major port city (world's busiest by tonnage); one of China's oldest trading ports (Tang dynasty, 7th century).
  • Population: 9.6 million.
  • Best months: April-May, September-October. June-August is hot and typhoon-prone.
  • HSR: Ningbo Station (宁波站) and Ningbo East (宁波东). From Shanghai 1.5-2 hours, 150-200 CNY 2nd class. From Hangzhou 1-1.5 hours, 80-110 CNY.
