5-Day Shenzhen Itinerary

TL;DR — Five days in Shenzhen (深圳) covers Window of the World (世界之窗), Splendid China (锦绣中华), Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园), Dafen Oil Painting Village (大芬油画村), OCT-LOFT (华侨城创意文化园), the Ping An Finance Centre (平安金融中心) at 599 m, and a Hong Kong side trip. Shenzhen is China's most modern, technology-forward, English-friendly city — the "Silicon Valley of China" feel is genuine. Total mid-range cost: ~¥3,500–5,000 per person (excl. hotel).

Day 1: Futian CBD + Civic Center

Morning (09:00–13:00): Ping An Finance Centre

  • 09:00 — Metro Line 1 or 3 to Shopping Park Station (购物公园站).
  • 09:30 — Ping An Finance Centre (平安金融中心, Ping An IFC), 599 m, 115 floors. The Free Sky observation deck on the 116th floor (云际观光层, ¥220) is the highest viewing platform in China. Allow 1.5 hours. Glass floor on the 113th floor is the photo op.
  • 11:00 — Walk to Civic Center (市民中心). The Shenzhen Museum (深圳博物馆) is free, 1.5 hours. Covers Shenzhen's transformation from a 30,000-person fishing village in 1979 to a 17-million-person megacity today.
  • 12:30 — Lunch at COCO Park (可可公园) or Exhibition Center (会展中心) food court for a quick modern Cantonese bite.

Afternoon (14:00–18:00): Lianhua Mountain + Civic Square

  • 14:00 — Metro to Lianhua North Station (莲花北站).
  • 14:30 — Lianhua Mountain Park (莲花山公园), free. 1 hour. Climb to the Deng Xiaoping statue at the summit, then 30 min to the "Reform Road" sculpture path documenting Shenzhen's 1980–2020 reforms.
  • 16:00 — Shenzhen Book City (深圳书城), the largest bookstore in China, 6 floors. Browse 1 hour.
  • 17:30 — Huaqiang North (华强北), the world's largest electronics market. Phones, drones, gadgets — haggle hard. Take metro Line 7 to Huaqiang Road Station. Allow 1 hour. The official Huaqiangbei Museum (华强北博物馆) is free, 30 min, and a smarter use of time.

Evening (18:30–22:00): CBD night skyline

  • 18:30 — Dinner at Jing Ji (京基) Cantonese restaurant or a casual dai pai dong in Coco Park. Try Cantonese roast goose (烧鹅), shrimp dumplings (虾饺), or Shenzhen-style chicken hotpot (鸡煲).
  • 20:00 — Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园) at night, free. The 13 km coastal walk shows Hong Kong's Tuen Mun (屯门) and Yuen Long (元朗) skylines across the bay. The 9 PM "light show" on the Shenzhen side is best viewed from Sea World (海上世界) in Shekou or Houhai (后海) metro area.
  • 21:30 — Optional cocktail at the 118th floor of the St. Regis (瑞吉酒店) or at the Park Hyatt (柏悦酒店) rooftop.

Day 2: Theme parks — Window of the World + Splendid China

Morning (08:30–13:00): Window of the World

  • 08:30 — Metro Line 1 or 5 to Window of the World Station (世界之窗站).
  • 09:00 — Window of the World (世界之窗), ¥220 entry. 130+ replicas of world landmarks at 1:1, 1:3, or 1:15 scale: Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Sydney Opera House, Mount Rushmore. The Eiffel Tower replica (108 m) is the centerpiece. Allow 4 hours. The afternoon "World Impression" parade at 15:30 is the highlight.
  • 12:30 — Lunch inside the park at one of the international food courts.

Afternoon (13:30–18:00): Splendid China

  • 13:30 — Walk 5 min to Splendid China (锦绣中华), ¥200 entry. Miniature replicas of China's landmarks: Great Wall, Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, Mogao Caves, Potala Palace, all at 1:15 scale. Combine with China Folk Culture Village (中国民俗文化村, +¥80) for ethnic minority performances. Allow 3 hours.
  • 17:00 — OCT Tower (华侨城大厦) viewing at sunset (¥80).

Evening (18:30–22:00): OCT-LOFT

  • 18:30 — Metro to Qiaocheng North Station (侨城北站).
  • 19:00 — OCT-LOFT (华侨城创意文化园), a converted 1980s industrial zone turned creative district. Galleries, design shops, cafes. The "Old Heaven Bookstore (旧天堂书店)" and the "Handmade Planet" indie craft market (Sundays) are highlights. Dinner at one of the many courtyard restaurants.

Day 3: Hong Kong side trip

Morning (08:00–13:00): Cross to Hong Kong

  • 08:00 — Take metro to Futian Checkpoint (福田口岸) or Lo Wu (罗湖). E-channel clearance takes 10–20 min for the prepared (bring your passport). Or use the MTR East Rail Line (东铁线) from Lo Wu Station directly into Hong Kong.
  • 09:00 — In Hong Kong by 9 AM. Take MTR to Central (中环).
  • 09:30 — Star Ferry (天星小轮), 8 min, ¥4. The Victoria Harbour crossing is the famous Hong Kong view.
  • 10:00 — Hong Kong Park + Peak Tram (山顶缆车): take the 1888 tram to Victoria Peak (太平山顶), ¥65. 1.5 hours at the top, with Sky Terrace 428 (¥65) for the 360° city view.
  • 12:00 — Lunch in Central: try dim sum at Lin Heung (莲香) or Maxim's Palace (美心皇宫). Budget ¥150–250 per person.

Afternoon (13:00–18:00): Kowloon or Lantau

  • 13:00 — MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀).
  • 13:30 — Avenue of Stars (星光大道), free, 30 min. Walk the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade with Hong Kong Island skyline across the harbour.
  • 14:30 — Mong Kok (旺角): the Ladies' Market (女人街), Sneaker Street (波鞋街), Goldfish Market (金鱼街). 1.5 hours.
  • 16:00 — Optional: Ngong Ping 360 cable car (昂坪360) to Tian Tan Buddha (天坛大佛, the Big Buddha) on Lantau Island, ¥235. 2 hours round trip. Skip if pressed for time.
  • 17:30 — Star Ferry back from Tsim Sha Tsui to Wan Chai or Central.

Evening (18:30–22:00): Return to Shenzhen

  • 18:30 — Dinner in Causeway Bay (铜锣湾) at Yat Lok (一乐烧鹅) (1 Michelin star, ¥100) or Mak's Noodle (麦奀云吞面世家) for wonton noodles.
  • 20:00 — MTR back to Lo Wu or Futian Checkpoint. Cross into Shenzhen by 21:00.

Day 4: Coastal Shenzhen + Shekou

Morning (08:00–12:00): Shenzhen Bay Park

  • 08:00 — Metro Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park Station (深圳湾公园站).
  • 08:30 — Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园), free, 13 km coastal walkway. The 1-hour walk to the Sea World end is the famous coastal view with Hong Kong's Mai Po (米埔) wetlands across the bay. Black-faced spoonbills and egrets winter here (Nov–March).
  • 11:00 — Sea World (海上世界), a redeveloped 1980s shipyard. The Minghua (明华) cruise ship is a hotel, restaurant, and bar. Lunch at one of the international restaurants.

Afternoon (13:00–18:00): Shekou + Nanshan

  • 13:30 — Shekou Historical Museum (蛇口历史博物馆), free, 1 hour. The 1979 fishing village that became China's first SEZ.
  • 14:30 — Nanshan Cultural and Sports Centre (南山文体中心) or the Shenzhen University (深圳大学) campus, the most beautiful in the city.
  • 16:00 — Dafen Oil Painting Village (大芬油画村), free, 1.5 hours. The world's largest oil painting reproduction village, 8,000+ artists. Buy a 1 m × 1 m reproduction of a Van Gogh for ¥100–300.

Evening (18:30–22:00): Tech-themed dinner

  • 18:30 — Dinner at a robotic restaurant — Foodom (机器人餐厅), the world's first fully robot-staffed restaurant in Nanshan. Or at Qiaotou (桥头) for a more traditional Cantonese seafood dinner.
  • 20:30 — Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre (春茧) or the Shenzhen Concert Hall (音乐厅) for an evening performance (if scheduled).

Day 5: Modern culture + departure

Morning (08:30–12:00): Design + Tech

  • 08:30 — Pingshan Art Museum (坪山美术馆), 1.5 hours, free. Contemporary Chinese art in a building by Vector Architects.
  • 10:00 — Tencent Binhai Mansion (腾讯滨海大厦), the Tencent Visitor Center (腾讯展厅, ¥30). The "WeChat" origins exhibit and a VR tour. Allow 1.5 hours. Real-name booking required via the official WeChat mini-program.
  • 11:30 — Coastal City (海岸城) or Yifang Centre (壹方城) shopping mall for last-minute souvenirs.

Afternoon (13:00–17:00): Tangwei Village or BYD Museum

  • 13:00 — Tangwei Village (塘尾村), free, 1.5 hours. A 600-year-old Hakka walled village preserved in the middle of the modern city. One of the most-photographed contrasts in Shenzhen.
  • 15:00 — BYD Museum (比亚迪博物馆), ¥30, 1.5 hours. China's largest EV maker, with the SkyRail (云轨) monorail and the "Dynasty" car series. Tech-geek pick. Real-name booking via WeChat required.
  • 16:30 — Final tea at the Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons (四季酒店).

Evening (17:30+): Departure

  • 17:30 — Metro Line 11 to Shenzhen Airport (深圳宝安机场), 30 min, ¥7. Or HSR from Shenzhen North (深圳北站) to Guangzhou South (广州南站), 30 min, ¥75.

Practical info

  • Airport: Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) — metro Line 11 to downtown, 30 min, ¥7.
  • Train: Shenzhen North and Futian are the HSR hubs. Guangzhou: 30 min, ¥75. Hong Kong (West Kowloon): 14 min, ¥75. Changsha: 3h, ¥390. Shanghai: 6.5h, ¥640.
  • Metro: 16 lines, ¥2–14 per ride. Tap with Alipay or WeChat.
  • Border crossings: Futian (福田口岸), Huanggang (皇岗口岸, 24h), Lo Wu (罗湖), Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾, 06:30–24:00), Liantang (莲塘). E-channel for fingerprint-registered passports.
  • Hotels: Stay in Futian (福田) or Nanshan (南山) for the modern CBD experience. Mandarin Oriental (文华东方) is the luxury anchor. InterContinental Shenzhen (深圳洲际) has a 28-floor atrium. Jinjiang Inn (锦江之星) for budget.
  • Best season: October–December (20–26°C, dry) and March–May (warm, low rain). June–September is hot, humid, typhoon-prone.
  • What to skip: The Minsk World (明思克航母), the 1970s Soviet aircraft carrier museum, is mostly closed since 2016 and not worth the trip. The Shenzhen Safari Park (野生动物园) is mid-tier; better options are in Guangzhou.
