5-Day Wuhan Itinerary
TL;DR: Five days is the ideal length for Wuhan (武汉), letting you cover the Yangtze landmarks, Hubei Provincial Museum, Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake, and a day trip to the Yangzi bridges without rushing. Use a mix of Metro Line 2/4, Didi (滴滴), and the ¥40/day tourist bus to move between sites. Best travel windows: mid-March to early May or late September to early November, avoiding the July–August furnace heat.
Before You Go
- Visa: Most Western passports need a tourist visa (L); apply at a Chinese consulate 4–6 weeks ahead. As of 2026, 30-day visa-free entry applies to several European countries, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea — verify your nationality on the official Chinese MFA site before booking.
- Currency: Cash is rarely needed in Wuhan. Set up Alipay (支付宝) or WeChat Pay (微信支付) with a foreign-linked card before arrival.
- Apps to install: Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps for navigation, Didi for taxis, Trip.com for tickets, Pleco for characters.
- SIM/eSIM: Airalo China eSIM (¥18/5 GB/7 days) or a China Unicom tourist SIM from Tianhe Airport Terminal 3 (¥80/7 days/20 GB).
- Best months: March–May and September–November. June is rainy; July–August averages 33–36°C with high humidity.
Day 1 — Arrival & Yellow Crane Tower (黄鹤楼)
- Morning: Land at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (天河机场, WUH). Metro Line 2 connects to Hankou Railway Station in 32 minutes (¥7). Drop bags at your hotel near Jianghan Road (江汉路) or Chuhe Hanjie (楚河汉街).
- Afternoon: Walk to Yellow Crane Tower (黄鹤楼) — rebuilt in 1981 on the 188-meter Snake Hill (蛇山). Buy tickets online via the official WeChat mini-program (¥70 adult / ¥35 student). Allow 2–3 hours; the west-side rampart viewpoint is the best Yangtze panorama.
- Evening: Dinner at Hubu Lane (户部巷), a 150-meter snack street 10 minutes on foot from the tower. Try Cai Lin Ji (蔡林记) hot-dry noodles (热干面, ¥8) and Lao Tongcheng (老通城) three-stuffed bun (三鲜豆皮, ¥12). End with a Yangtze night cruise from Yanjiang Avenue Pier (沿江大道码头) — 1-hour boat, ¥120/person, departures 19:30 and 20:30.
Day 2 — Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省博物馆) & East Lake (东湖)
- Morning: Open 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays. Book free entry 1–7 days ahead via the museum's WeChat account. Highlights: the 2,400-year-old Sword of Goujian, Marquis Yi of Zeng bronze bells (曾侯乙编钟), and a daily 11:00 chime concert (¥30). Plan 3 hours.
- Afternoon: Metro Line 4 to Liyuan Station (梨园站), then 10 minutes on foot to East Lake (东湖). Rent a bike (¥20/hour) at Moshan Hill (磨山). Cycle the 28 km lakeside greenway in 2.5 hours, or take the ¥40 sightseeing shuttle.
- Evening: Dinner at Huji (胡集) inside East Lake's Tingtao scenic area — crispy rice with pork (锅巴肉片, ¥68). Return to the city by Didi (¥35, 25 min).
Day 3 — Wuchang Historic Core & Yangtze Bridge
- Morning: Walk the 1.2 km Tanhua Lin Road (昙华林), a 130-year-old lane of cafés and Republic-era buildings. Brunch at Banmu Courtyard (半亩园), set noodles ¥28.
- Afternoon: Cross on foot the First Yangtze River Bridge (武汉长江大桥) — opened 1957, 1.67 km long. Ascend Yellow Crane Tower's sister viewpoint, Sheshan Observatory (蛇山观景台), for a top-down view of the bridge. Optional: ascend Guishan TV Tower (龟山电视塔), ¥80, for sunset.
- Evening: Wuhan's best-known duck-neck chain is Jiangxia Bullfrog (江夏鱼蛙), or try local ribs soup at Lao Wuhan Jiujiaya (老武汉久久鸭), ¥45/person. Train back via Line 4.
Day 4 — Hankou Waterfront & DAY TRIP OPTION
- Morning: Hankou Bund (汉口江滩) sunrise, then walk north to the Five Great Museums Complex (武汉博物馆群). The Wuhan Museum (武汉博物馆) is free; the Jianghan Customs House Museum (江汉关博物馆) has Yangtze shipping exhibits (¥20).
- Afternoon: Pick one day-trip option:
| Option | Destination | Transit | Time | Cost (¥) | |---|---|---|---|---| | A | Yellow Crane Tower of Hanyang / Guqin Terrace (古琴台) | Metro Line 4 to Zhongjiacun | 30 min | Free–¥15 | | B | Moshan Hill Plum Garden (磨山梅园) | Bus 401 from Liyuan | 45 min | ¥60 | | C | Wuhan University (武汉大学) — Luojia Mountain | Metro Line 2 to Jiegoumen | 40 min | Free |

- Option B (relaxed): Sleep in, then visit Qingchuan Pavilion (晴川阁) on the north bank (¥20, free Wed). Lunch at Jiujiangyichun (九十九间半), ¥80/person.
- Afternoon: Last-minute shopping at Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street (江汉路步行街), then Didi to the airport (45 min, ¥110–140).
Practical Tips
- Transit: Metro runs 6:00–22:45. Single fare ¥2–9. A 72-hour tourist pass (¥70) is good value if you ride 8+ times.
- Tickets: Reserve the Provincial Museum, Yellow Crane Tower, and the night cruise on Trip.com or the official WeChat mini-programs. ID/passport required at every site.
- Cash backup: Bring ¥500 cash; small vendors and rural Day 5 stops sometimes reject mobile pay.
- Health: Pack an umbrella June–August; AQIs occasionally spike in winter — a KN95 is useful.
- Language: Outside hotels and museums, English is limited. Screenshot addresses in hanzi for taxi drivers.
Final note: Verify all prices and operating hours on the official Wuhan Tourism site (wuhan.gov.cn) and Trip.com within 7 days of travel, as 2026 holiday schedules and ticket policies shift frequently.
