7-Day Dalian Itinerary

TL;DR — 7 days in Dalian (大连) is longer than most travellers need for the city alone, but it makes sense if you add Dandong (丹东) on the North Korean border and Shenyang (沈阳) for Qing-dynasty imperial tombs. The city itself fills 3–4 days; the Liaoning province loop adds another 3. Best June–September for beach weather. This itinerary is a slow-paced version with neighbourhood depth, designed for travellers who want a "live like a local" pace.

Day 1 — Arrival, seafront orientation

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Arrive at Dalian Railway Station (大连站) or Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport (DLC). Check in to hotel.
  • 16:00 — Walk the Xinghai Bay (星海湾), 2 km, free, watch the sunset over the Yellow Sea.
  • 18:30 — Dinner at Xinghai Square (星海广场), seafood. ¥120–180/person. Try Dalian sea snails (海螺) and stir-fried clams (辣炒花蛤).

Evening

  • 21:00 — Optional: Donggang (东港) musical fountain, free, runs 20:00 and 21:00 nightly in summer.

Day 2 — Binhai Road (滨海路) full drive

  • 08:30 — Start the Binhai Road (滨海路) drive at Xinghai Square, end at Laodong Park (劳动公园) in the north. 40 km, 4 hours with stops.
  • 09:00 — Yanwu Ridge (燕窝岭), free, cliff viewpoint, 30 min.
  • 10:00 — Beida Bridge (北大桥), free, the famous suspension bridge, photo stop.
  • 10:30 — Fisherman's Wharf (渔人码头), free, walk the European village replica, 1 hour.

Lunch

  • 12:00 — At Fisherman's Wharf, ¥100–150/person.

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Bangchui Island (棒槌岛), ¥20, 1.5 hours, the most photogenic crescent bay in Dalian.
  • 16:00 — Tiger Beach Ocean Park (老虎滩海洋公园), ¥220, 3 hours, the largest aquarium in Dalian with beluga whales, sea lions, polar bears.

Evening

  • 19:00 — Dinner near Zhongshan Square (中山广场), ¥120–180/person.

Day 3 — Russian heritage day

Morning

  • 08:30 — Russian Street (俄罗斯风情街), free, walk and photograph, 1 hour.
  • 10:00 — Dalian Modern Museum (大连现代博物馆), free, 1.5 hours.
  • 11:30 — Zhongshan Square (中山广场), free, the 10 European-style buildings from the Japanese colonial era.

Lunch

  • 12:30 — Russian-influenced lunch, ¥100–180/person. Borscht (罗宋汤), Russian bread (列巴), beef stroganoff (俄式牛肉).

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Donggang (东港) harbour, free, 2 hours. The Dalian International Conference Center (大连国际会议中心) "shell" building.
  • 16:00 — Dalian Port (大连港), free, walk the historic wharf.

Evening

  • 19:00 — Dinner at Renmin Road (人民路) food street, ¥80–120/person.

Day 4 — Jinshitan (金石滩) day trip

Morning

  • 08:00 — Metro Line 3 to Jinshitan Station (金石滩站), ¥8, 1 hour.
  • 09:30 — Jinshi Beach (金石滩), ¥60 entry, 2 hours. The "Golden Pebble Beach" — the stones are unusually coloured and smooth.
  • 11:30 — Jinshi Cultural Museum (金石文化博物馆), ¥40, 1 hour.

Lunch

  • 12:30 — Seafood at Jinshitan, ¥120–180/person. The seafood here is fresher than central Dalian.

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Discoveryland Theme Park (发现王国), ¥230, half-day, Disney-style park. Skip if you have already been to a major Chinese theme park.
  • 17:00 — Or Jinshi Wax Museum (金石蜡像馆), ¥80, 1 hour, return to city.

Day 5 — Travel to Dandong (丹东)

Morning

  • 08:00 — High-speed train from Dalian Station to Dandong Station (丹东站), ¥220, 3.5 hours.
  • 12:00 — Arrive Dandong, check in, lunch. Dandong barbecue (丹东烤肉) or Korean-influenced cold noodles (冷面), ¥80–120/person.

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Yalu River Park (鸭绿江公园), free, walk along the river, view North Korea across the water.
  • 15:30 — Broken Bridge (鸭绿江断桥), ¥30, the bridge bombed in 1950, half-destroyed, photo stop.
  • 17:00 — Andong Old Street (安东老街), free, restored 1930s Korean-Chinese neighbourhood.

Evening

  • 19:00 — Dinner, try Dandong-style river fish (鸭绿江鲤鱼), ¥120–180/person.
  • 21:00 — Night walk along the Yalu River, the lights of Sinuiju (North Korea) are visible.

Day 6 — Shenyang (沈阳)

Morning

  • 08:00 — High-speed train from Dandong to Shenyang North Station (沈阳北站), ¥110, 1.5 hours.
  • 10:00 — Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫), ¥60, 2 hours, the Qing-dynasty palace before the emperors moved to Beijing's Forbidden City. UNESCO.

Lunch

  • 12:30 — Lunch in Taiyuan Street (太原街), ¥60–100/person. Try Laobian Dumplings (老边饺子), founded 1829, the most famous dumpling restaurant in northeast China.

Afternoon

  • 14:00 — Zhao Mausoleum (昭陵), the Beiling Park (北陵公园), ¥50, 1.5 hours. The tomb of Hong Taiji, the second Qing emperor.
  • 16:00 — September 18 History Museum (九一八历史博物馆), free, 1 hour. Documents the 1931 Mukden Incident that triggered Japan's invasion of Manchuria.

Evening

  • 18:30 — Dinner at Middle Street (中街), the historic pedestrian road, ¥80–150/person. Try Shenyang-style spicy hotpot (麻辣火锅).
  • 21:00 — Optional: Shenyang TV Tower (沈阳电视塔) night view, ¥80.

Day 7 — Return to Dalian or Shenyang departure

Option A: Return to Dalian

  • 08:00 — Train to Dalian, ¥180, 3 hours.
  • 12:00 — Lunch in Dalian, then airport transfer.

Option B: Departure from Shenyang

  • Shenyang Taoxian Airport (SHE) has flights to Beijing, Shanghai, and most major cities.

How to get around

  • Dalian Metro has 5 lines, covers the city well
  • DiDi works in Dalian, Dandong, and Shenyang
  • High-speed trains between cities are reliable and cheap
  • No car needed for any city on this itinerary

Practical tips

  • Dandong is right on the North Korean border — bring your passport, you may be asked at random
  • Photos of North Korean side are OK from public viewing points but do not photograph military installations
  • Dalian is bilingual (Chinese and Russian heritage), Shenyang is Mandarin
  • Manchurian food is heavy on pickles (酸菜, suāncài), dumplings, and pork. Less seafood than Dalian
  • Shenyang is colder in winter (-20°C) than Dalian (-10°C)
  • The Shenyang Imperial Palace is much smaller than Beijing's but more intimate

Verdict

7 days in Dalian and the Liaoning loop is more time than most travellers want, but it rewards those interested in northeast China: Russian colonial architecture, Korean-Chinese border culture, and Qing-dynasty origins. Skip the 7th day and do 5 if you just want Dalian + Dandong. Skip the 6th day if you don't care about Qing history.
