7 Days in Jinan & Shandong: Springs, Confucius, Mount Tai, and Qingdao Coast
TL;DR
- Best season: April–May or September–October. Avoid the August holiday peak (Aug 1–7, 2026 for National Day planning) and freezing December–February weekends on Mount Tai 泰山.
- Total budget (per person, 2026 estimates): ¥3,500–5,500 budget, ¥6,000–9,000 mid-range, ¥12,000+ comfort. Includes trains, hotels, entry fees, and food; excludes international flights.
- Pace: Moderate. Two urban days in Jinan, one pilgrimage day in Qufu, one hiking day on Mount Tai, one Qingdao day trip, with arrival/departure buffers. Easily slowed for families or accelerated by skipping Tai'an overnight.
- Route: Jinan 济南 → Qufu 曲阜 → Tai'an 泰安 → Jinan → Qingdao 青岛 (day trip) → Jinan departure.
Day 1 — Arrive in Jinan, Springs Introduction
Morning: Land at Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport (TNA) or Jinan West Railway Station (Jinanxi 济南西). Airport buses Route 1 and 2 (¥20, ~50 min) reach Quancheng Square 泉城广场; airport taxi fixed-fare ¥90–120 to central hotels. From the high-speed rail station, Metro Line 1 or 4 (¥3–5) covers most central stops.
Afternoon: Walk Baotu Spring Park 趵突泉公园 (¥40, Tue–Sun 7:00–19:00, verify with park). Allow 2 hours for the three main spring clusters and Li Qingzhao's memorial. Stroll 800 m east to the 99-ming spring cluster, then onto Daming Lake 大明湖 (free outer park, ¥30 boat ride) — sunset paddle boat is ¥60.
Evening: Dinner at Jinan's old commercial street, Furong Street 芙蓉街. Try sweet fried fish (糖醋鲤鱼) and Jinan's "nine-turn intestine" (九转大肠). Overnight near Quancheng Square.
Day 2 — Jinan Old Town & Spring Cluster Deep Dive
Morning: Black Tiger Spring 黑虎泉 (free, 24/7) at 6:00 a.m. — locals still collect water here, so bring a bottle. Continue 1.5 km south to Five Dragon Pool 五龙潭 (¥5).
Afternoon: Drive or DiDi (~¥30) to the Thousand Buddha Mountain 千佛山 (¥30, cable car ¥20 one way). The 18-m Sakyamuni sits at the summit, 285 m above sea level. Descend by 16:00.
Evening: Modern dinner at MixC Mall 万象城 (K99 Korean, Yu He Xiang Shandong cuisine) or night-market skewers near Daming Lake south gate.
Day 3 — Bullet Train to Qufu, Confucius Half-Day
Transit: Jinan West → Qufu East (Jinanxi 济南西 → Qufudong 曲阜东), G-train, 30–40 min, ¥45 second class, ~10 daily departures each way. Check 12306 for live 2026 schedules.
Morning: Qufu's 孔庙 Confucius Temple (¥80 combined ticket with Kong Family Mansion 孔府 and Cemetery 孔林; valid 7 days). Allow 3 hours for the 1,000-year-old cypress grove and the Apricot Platform.
Afternoon: Yan Temple 颜庙 (¥50, included in some combo tickets — verify on site) or Nishan Sacred Land 尼山圣境 (¥80 incl. shuttle), 25 km south — the newer, cinematic Confucius park; close before 17:00.
Evening: Stay overnight in Qufu. Dinner: Kong Mansion Tofu Banquet at 阙里街 — book via hotel concierge, ¥150–300/person. Late train or taxi to Tai'an (40 min, ¥60–80).
Day 4 — Mount Tai 泰山 Sunrise
Night start: Take a DiDi from Qufu hotel to Tai'an (¥120, 45 min) or board the Tai Shan 泰山 high-speed station via Qufu → Tai'an 曲阜东 → Tai'an (10 min, ¥20). Check in to a budget hotel at the foot of the mountain (¥180–350).
Hike option: Take bus to Zhongtianmen 中天门 (¥30, 30 min), then walk 1.5 h to Nantianmen 南天门, or take the cable car (¥100 one way). Hikers should start by 22:00 for sunrise at the summit (Zhanlu Terrace 瞻鲁台 or Riguan Peak 日观峰, ~1,545 m).
Sunrise timing: April sunrise 5:30 a.m., October 6:00 a.m. — verify via weather app. Bring a windbreaker; summit temps drop 8–10°C below the city.
Descent: Cable car back (¥100) by 9:00, lunch in Tai'an city (try 煎饼卷大葱 "scallion pancake"), high-speed train back to Jinan (~20 min, ¥35). Sleep in Jinan again.
Day 5 — Qingdao Day Trip
Transit: Jinan East → Qingdao North (Jinandong 济南东 → Qingdaobei 青岛北) or Jinan West → Qingdao (Jinanxi 济南西 → Qingdao), 1h 30m–2h 30m on G-trains, ¥165 second class. 6+ direct trains each way daily; first departure around 6:30, return options until 21:00.
Morning: Metro Line 3 to the Eight Great Passes 八大关 (¥0 metro fare; Zhanqiao Pier 栈桥 is the closer stop for older visitors). Walk 30 minutes through the colonial-era villa district.
Afternoon: Tsingtao Beer Museum 青岛啤酒博物馆 (¥60, includes one pint). Stroll the old harbor and May Fourth Square 五四广场. Optional: take the ferry to Xiaoyushan Park 小鱼山 (¥10) for skyline photos.
Evening: Seafood dinner on Yunxiao Road 雲霄路 — clams in butter, steamed prawns, Tsingtao draught. Train back to Jinan by 21:00.
Day 6 — Jinan Slow Day
Morning: Shandong Museum 山东省博物馆 (free, Tue–Sun 9:00–17:00, ID required). Allocate 2 hours. Adjacent to the Provincial Library.
Afternoon: Spring City Square 泉城广场, then Jinan Oulebao Zoo (not family-friendly)? Skip — instead enjoy Baotu Spring at night with the colored fountains, or visit Hongjialou 红叶谷 if mid-October.
Evening: Farewell dinner: try the Caozipo Inn-style Shandong banquet 草籽泊 or Ju De Yuan 聚德园 for braised sweet-sour carp.
Day 7 — Departure
Pack light. From Quancheng Square, take Metro Line 2 to Jinan West Station (¥5, 25 min) for high-speed departures, or airport bus direct (¥20, 70 min) to TNA. For international flights, arrive 2.5 h before departure — Jinan Yaoqiang processes fewer long-haul flights than Beijing or Shanghai.
Practical Tips
- Where to stay in Jinan: Lixia District 历下区 (Quancheng Square, Daming Lake) for first-timers; Hilton, Atour, and Ji Hotel chains ¥400–900/night; budget hostels like 7Days Inn ¥180–280.
- Where to stay in Qufu: 阙里街 or 明故城 area within 800 m of Confucius Temple, ¥200–500.
- Tai'an: Stay at the foot of the mountain (红门 Hongmen or 天外村 Tianwaicun square) — avoids a pre-dawn taxi.
- Tickets: Book Mount Tai entry (¥115 peak season, ¥100 off-peak) on the WeChat mini-program "泰山景区" to skip queues. Same for Qufu's Confucius sites.
- Transit apps: 12306 (trains), Alipay/WeChat (metro + bus), DiDi (taxi). Cash still useful at small Qufu and Tai'an vendors.
- Food budget: ¥60–100/day street food; ¥150–300 mid-range; ¥400+ banquet.
- Connectivity: eSIM with China Mobile or Unicom data (Airalo, Nomad) for Google Maps and DiDi; mainland WeChat Pay requires linking an overseas card — verify with your bank before departure.
- Etiquette: Quiet voices at Confucius sites; no flash photography in the Temple halls; sturdy shoes and a small headlamp are essential for the Mount Tai night climb.
