7-Day Suzhou Itinerary
TL;DR — A 7-day Suzhou (苏州) plan for first-timers: Days 1–2: Classical gardens (Humble Administrator's, Lion Grove, Lingering, Net Master, Master of Nets) + Suzhou Museum + Pingtan opera. Day 3: Tongli water town 同里. Day 4: Zhouzhuang or Luzhi water town 周庄 / 甪直. Day 5: Day trip to Shanghai OR Hangzhou OR Nanjing. Day 6: Tiger Hill 虎丘 + Hanshan Temple 寒山寺 + Silk Museum. Day 7: Slow day + last food + departure. 7 days is overkill for garden-only, ideal for the full Yangtze Delta experience.
Why 7 days in Suzhou?
7 days is not for the gardens — 2 days covers them. 7 days is for the Yangtze Delta region: Suzhou is the perfect base to see water towns, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing without packing. Most travellers combine:
- 3 days in Suzhou (gardens + museums)
- 2 days in water towns (Tongli, Zhouzhuang, or Luzhi)
- 2 days in Shanghai OR Hangzhou
This is the deeper Yangtze Delta experience — what the Chinese themselves do for 1-week trips.
When should I go?
- Best: April–May and September–November (15–25 °C, blossoms / autumn leaves).
- Avoid: June–August (35 °C+), March plum rain (sustained drizzle, ~15 days), Chinese public holidays.

Common mistakes
- Don't do Zhouzhuang AND Tongli AND Luzhi — pick 2, they're similar.
- Don't miss the Pingtan opera — it's the soul of Suzhou culture.
- Don't go on weekends — Tongli and Zhouzhuang become unrecognizably crowded.
- Don't buy silk at the gates of the gardens — most is synthetic. Buy at the Suzhou Silk Museum shop or the Silk City 丝绸城 at Guanqian Street (real silk, real prices).
- Don't try to do Shanghai and Hangzhou both in one day — pick one.
Verdict
7 days is the right amount if you want a Yangtze Delta trip centred on Suzhou. 2–3 days covers the gardens; the rest is for water towns + Shanghai or Hangzhou. Don't try to do this in 4 days — you'll regret it.
