What to expect

Yanmenguan stands about 20 km north of Dai County in Xinzhou, Shanxi — a critical pass on the Great Wall. The name 'Wild Goose Gate' is explained two ways: wild geese are said to fly through the pass in formation, or the peaks flanking the fortress resemble a goose's head. Commanding dangerous ground, it is the natural corridor between the Shanxi plateau and the Inner Mongolian plateau.

The pass has a long history: King Wuling of Zhao established it in the Warring States era, and every dynasty after repaired or extended it. Wang Zhaojun passed north through the gate on her marriage journey in the Han; Xue Rengui garrisoned Yanmen in the Tang; and Xu Da rebuilt the fortress in the Ming. Built into the mountain slope, the walls stretch away past well-preserved enemy towers and beacon platforms.

Visitors can climb the wall path to the top of the pass for sweeping views beyond the frontier. Inside the fortress, the Yanmenguan Museum traces the pass's changing fortunes through history. The site is remote — drive yourself or join a day tour from Taiyuan.

How to get there

Driving or an organized tour is easiest — about 2.5 hours from downtown Taiyuan. Direct buses run from Taiyuan East Bus Station to Dai County, from where a taxi reaches the pass.
