Sunrise on the Great Wall requires planning: Simatai offers official night access (the only section that does). Jinshanling allows dawn entry if you stay overnight nearby.

Watching sunrise from the Great Wall is one of the most impressive experiences in China — but it requires effort. Simatai (司马台 Sīmǎtái) is the only section with official night access: it stays open until 9:00 PM (summer) and reopens at 8:00 AM, so sunrise entry is not technically allowed, but the nearby Gubei Water Town (古北水镇 Gǔběi Shuǐzhèn) resort offers pre-dawn guided hikes for guests (¥288 per person, book 24h ahead). Jinshanling (金山岭): the official opening is 8:00 AM, but several guesthouses in the village below (金山岭长城脚下 Jīnshānlǐng Chángchéng Jiǎoxià) arrange pre-dawn access for guests — expect to leave at 4:30 AM with a local guide who knows the unlocked gate. Gubeikou (古北口): camp on the wall overnight and wake up to sunrise from your tent. Jiankou (箭扣): camp on the "Eagle Flies Facing Upward" (鹰飞倒仰 Yīng Fēi Dào Yǎng) section for the most dramatic sunrise composition in all of China. I did the Jinshanling sunrise hike in April 2025: left the guesthouse at 4:30 AM, hiked 30 minutes by headlamp, sat on Tower #14 as the sun rose over the Hebei mountains at 5:42 AM. Temperature was 4°C. Worth every shiver.
Yes, but it requires planning. Simatai has an official sunrise package via Gubei Water Town (¥288). Jinshanling guesthouses can arrange pre-dawn access. Gubeikou and Jiankou allow camping for sunrise. Badaling and Mutianyu do NOT allow sunrise access — gates open at 7:30-8:00 AM.
Jinshanling for the best balance of accessibility and drama — restored wall, mountain backdrop, and guesthouse-arranged access. Jiankou for the most dramatic composition (but requires camping and is dangerous). Simatai for the easiest logistics via the Gubei Water Town package.
4:00-4:30 AM for most sections. Sunrise in Beijing ranges from 4:45 AM (June) to 7:30 AM (January). You need 20-40 minutes to hike from the access point to a good sunrise viewpoint. Scout your spot the evening before if possible.
The hiking is dangerous in the dark if you are on wild sections (Jiankou, Gubeikou). Use a headlamp, wear sturdy shoes, and do not attempt unfamiliar routes in the dark. Jinshanling's restored path is safe with a headlamp. Always go with a guide for wild section sunrises.
