Is Hainan visa-free for foreigners?
Yes — the same 30-day visa-free that applies to Beijing/Shanghai also covers Hainan. As of 2026, 38+ countries qualify. Hainan also has a separate visa-free entry for tour groups arriving via specific cruise lines.
When is the best time to visit Hainan?
Year-round. Water temperature is 22-28°C. Best: November-April (dry, less humid). Avoid: typhoon season July-September (occasional flight cancellations). May-June and October are good value with mild weather.
Is Sanya expensive?
Mid-range and luxury are pricey (5-star resorts are $200-500/night), but food and local transport are cheap. Backpacker hostels are limited — most budget travelers stay in Haikou (the capital, 1.5h from Sanya by HSR) and day-trip to Sanya beaches.
Can I combine Hainan with the cities?
Yes — fly Sanya → Shanghai or Beijing at the end (3h direct, $150). Most travelers do 5 days Hainan after the cities for a relaxing finish. Sanya also has direct international flights to/from Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow.
