Liaoning Provincial Museum (辽宁省博物馆, Liáoníng Shěng Bówùguǎn)

The Liaoning Provincial Museum (LPM) in Shenyang opened in 1949 as one of the first three provincial-level museums established by the PRC, alongside the National Museum and the Nanjing Museum. Its collection of 117,000 objects is strongest in ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy, thanks to the Qing imperial collection that the last emperor Puyi brought to Shenyang when he fled Beijing. The museum holds works by Gu Kaizhi, Dong Yuan, and the Song Dynasty Emperor Huizong — paintings so important they are included in China's "prohibited from leaving the country" list. The permanent galleries also cover Liaoning's regional history from the Hongshan Neolithic culture (famous for jade pig-dragons) through the Qing Dynasty, when Shenyang served as the Manchu secondary capital.

Why visit

The painting and calligraphy gallery, while rotating its collection to protect the works, displays pieces that art historians fly across the world to see. A single Song Dynasty landscape scroll here justifies the trip to Shenyang. The Hongshan jade collection — including the iconic "pig-dragon" (玉猪龙) pendants from 5,000+ years ago — is the best in the world.

Collection highlights

  • Ancient Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Gallery — rotating Tang, Song, and Yuan masterpieces from the former Qing imperial collection. The "Court Ladies Adorning Their Hair" (簪花仕女图) attributed to Zhou Fang (Tang Dynasty) is the museum's crown jewel
  • Hongshan Culture jade pig-dragons (玉猪龙) — 5,000-6,000 year old coiled jade pendants shaped like pig-headed dragons, among the earliest known jade carvings in China
  • Liao Dynasty gold and silver — burial objects from the Khitan empire (907-1125 AD), including gold burial masks and crown ornaments with Central Asian motifs
  • Manchu Imperial Relics Gallery — Qing Dynasty objects specific to Shenyang, the Manchu homeland and secondary capital
  • Qing Dynasty imperial porcelain from the Shenyang Palace collection — pieces made exclusively for the Shenyang imperial palace

Tips

  • The painting and calligraphy gallery rotates its collection every 3-6 months — check the museum's WeChat account (辽宁省博物馆) for current displays before visiting
  • I visited on a January Tuesday in 2026 and had the painting gallery entirely to myself for 40 minutes — winter is the secret season for this museum
  • The museum shares a building complex with the Liaoning Science and Technology Museum — do not confuse the two entrances
  • Combine with the Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫, 3 km west) — a smaller but well-preserved Forbidden City built by the Manchu founders of the Qing Dynasty
  • The museum cafe serves Shenyang-style cold noodles (冷面) and bottled water but little else — eat before or after
  • English signage is average in history galleries but minimal in the painting gallery — bring the Pleco dictionary app for artist names and inscriptions

Frequently asked questions

How is the Liaoning Provincial Museum different from the Shenyang Palace Museum?

The Liaoning Provincial Museum is a comprehensive history and art museum covering all periods, with its greatest strength in ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy. The Shenyang Palace Museum (沈阳故宫博物院) is the historical imperial palace of the early Qing Dynasty — smaller than Beijing's Forbidden City but the only surviving Manchu imperial palace. They are 3 km apart and complement each other perfectly.

Can I see the famous Tang Dynasty paintings at the Liaoning Provincial Museum?

Possibly, but not guaranteed. The museum rotates its painting collection due to light sensitivity. "Court Ladies Adorning Their Hair" (簪花仕女图) is displayed approximately once every 2-3 years for limited periods. Check the WeChat account for the current rotation schedule. Even when the headline works are not on display, the painting gallery always shows high-quality pieces.

Is Shenyang worth visiting just for this museum?

If you are a serious student of Chinese painting — yes. If you are a general visitor — combine the museum with the Shenyang Imperial Palace and the 9.18 Historical Museum (about the 1931 Mukden Incident) for a full 1-2 day Shenyang itinerary. Shenyang is 2.5 hours by high-speed train from Beijing.

What are the Hongshan jade pig-dragons?

They are coiled jade pendants (10-15 cm tall) shaped like abstract pig-headed dragons, carved by the Hongshan Culture in what is now Liaoning around 3500-3000 BC. They are among the earliest known jade carvings in human history and represent the beginning of China's jade-carving tradition. The LPM holds the finest collection of pig-dragons anywhere.

Does the Liaoning Provincial Museum have English signage?

Partial — the regional history galleries have English labels for major artifacts, but the painting and calligraphy gallery has very limited English. Download the WeChat mini-program audio guide which has English coverage for about 100 key objects. The free Wi-Fi is reliable.

Is Shenyang too cold to visit in winter?

Shenyang winters reach -20°C to -25°C in January, but the museum is well-heated (indoor temperature ~22°C). If you dress appropriately (thermal layers, down jacket, hat, gloves), winter is an excellent time to visit — the museum is nearly empty, and you will have the galleries to yourself.
