When is the worst time to visit?

Stay central — close to the metro and within walking distance of the top sights. This lets you skip taxis for most day trips and is the easiest base for first-timers.
How much cash do I need to bring?
Almost none. Alipay (linked to a foreign Visa/Mastercard) covers 95% of vendors. Carry ¥500–800 in cash as backup for small stalls. Tipping is not expected.
