Can I see Heaven Lake?
Yes — but the lake is only visible 1/3 of the year due to fog. Best chance: late August–September, or a clear winter day. The climb from the entrance to the lake is steep (30-45 min by stairs).
What is rime ice?
A natural phenomenon where trees along the Songhua River become coated in thick white ice crystals from the warm river water meeting cold winter air. Jilin City is the best place to see it — typically late December through February.
Is Jilin worth visiting in winter?
Yes — for rime ice viewing, skiing at Changbai Mountain's slopes, and Harbin-style ice culture (though Harbin itself is in Heilongjiang, not Jilin). Bring heavy winter gear.
How do I get from Changchun to Changbai Mountain?
No train. Options: bus (5-6 hours, ¥100), private car (4-5 hours, ¥600-800), or fly Changchun → Changbaishan Airport (1h, then 1h drive to the mountain).
