Frequently asked questions
Can I see North Korea from Dandong?
Yes — Dandong sits on the Yalu River, directly across from Sinuiju, North Korea. Walk along the riverfront, take a boat tour, or visit the Broken Bridge (the unfinished bridge from the Korean War).
Is Dalian worth visiting?
Yes — it's one of China's cleanest and most livable cities, with beaches, seafood, Russian and Japanese colonial architecture, and a pleasant climate. 2-3 days is ideal.
How is Shenyang Imperial Palace different from Beijing's?
Shenyang's was the Qing Dynasty's first capital (1625-1644) before they moved to Beijing. It's smaller and more intimate than the Forbidden City, with a mix of Manchu, Mongol, and Chinese architectural styles.
What is Liaoning's food specialty?
Liaoning is the southernmost northeast province and shares the hearty Northeastern cuisine: Guobaorou (crispy sweet-sour pork), pork and pickled cabbage dumplings, and Dalian's fresh seafood.
Is it safe to visit the North Korean border?
Yes — the Chinese side of the Yalu River is a normal tourist destination with restaurants, viewpoints, and boat tours. You can see North Korean villages across the river but cannot cross.
When is the best time for Dalian beach?
July and August — water is warm enough for swimming (24-26°C). June and September are pleasant but cooler. Avoid October–April.
How do I get from Dalian to Pyongyang?
You can't as a tourist. Dandong has air routes to Pyongyang but only for organized tours with prior approval. For casual travelers, Dandong is the closest you can get.
