How many days do I need here?
Allow at least 3 days for the highlights. 4–5 days lets you add nearby sites and a day trip. A week lets you see everything at a relaxed pace.
When is the worst time to visit?
Golden Week (October 1–7) — domestic tourists travel en masse. Also avoid Spring Festival (late Jan/Feb) and Labor Day (May 1–5). Summer (July–August) is hot, humid, and crowded.
Is it safe for solo travelers?
Very safe. Violent crime against foreigners is extremely rare and petty theft is uncommon. The main risk is traffic — e-bikes and scooters use sidewalks.
Can I use my credit card?
Foreign Visa/Mastercard works at major hotels and malls, but most restaurants, taxis, and street vendors only accept Alipay/WeChat Pay. Set up Alipay with your foreign card before you arrive.
Do I need to speak Chinese?
No, but download Pleco (offline dictionary) and a translation app. Tourist areas have English signage, metro announcements are in English, and staff at international hotel chains speak English.
What's the best way to get from the airport?
Airport Express train or metro is the fastest and cheapest. DiDi taxi is ¥100–150. Avoid unmetered taxis at arrivals.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in?
Stay central — close to the metro and within walking distance of the top sights. This lets you skip taxis for most day trips and is the easiest base for first-timers.
How much cash do I need to bring?
Almost none. Alipay (linked to a foreign Visa/Mastercard) covers 95% of vendors. Carry ¥500–800 in cash as backup for small stalls. Tipping is not expected.
