14 Days in Alxa

Most routes into Alxa start from Yinchuan; before crossing the Helan Mountains westward, see the Western Xia imperial tombs at their eastern foot, inscribed by UNESCO in 2025.

A softer desert morning — the lake south of town takes its name from the migrating swans of spring and autumn; boardwalks, camel rings and tea tents keep the pace kind.

The transfer to Alxa Right Banner takes most of a day; break it at Mandela Mountain, where thousands of petroglyphs cover the dark rock faces, then overnight in banner town.

Charter a local 4WD for the deep desert — the lake-and-dune country around Bilutu, counted among the world's tallest stationary dunes; start early, the tracks are long.

Leave before dawn for the lake about 60 km north, where reed beds meet migrating waterbirds, then see the centuries-old sacred poplar near town and keep the evening free.
