North Pagoda, Murong Street & South Pagoda

The 42.6-metre North Pagoda stacks five eras — its brick body is a Liao rebuild of the 1040s over Northern Wei, Sui and Tang predecessors, on foundations of the Yan capital Longcheng founded in 341; the pedestrian Murong Street runs between it and the South Pagoda.

About a 90-minute drive west, the Niuheliang state park protects a Hongshan culture ritual complex some 5,500 years old — a semi-sunken goddess temple, stone-pile tombs and jade pig-dragons now shown in the on-site museum.

Bird Fossil Park & departure

Slabs in the park's quarry section preserve a 120-million-year-old lake world — early birds, feathered dinosaurs and fish; the 1996 find of Sinosauropteryx in these beds made the region a paleontology landmark, and the HSR link opened in January 2021 puts Beijing about two hours away.
