Arrival & the Old Street

Gankou was listed among Taizhou's ten market towns in the Wanli-era (1573-1620) gazetteer of 1604, and its old street quarter in today's Jiangyan District still keeps Ming-Qing houses behind some 600 years of settlement. A small place without ticketed sights — walk the lanes slowly, then the evening food market.

Canal Country & Market Morning

The Lixiahe lowland around town is a lattice of canals, levees and rice-and-crab fields; a morning at the township market comes first, then levee paths on foot or by hired bike. It is working farm country, not a park — bring water and let the day stay loose.

Qintong & Qinhu Day

An honest same-district day — Qintong's water-town lanes and the Qinhu wetland park sit within Jiangyan District, a short ride from Gankou. Boardwalks, boat lanes and the town's crab-forward Qinhu table, the local so-called eight fresh dishes; the Qingming-next-day boat festival packs the town if your dates land near it.

Taizhou City Day

The prefecture city sits under 40 km away by road. The Fengcheng river old moat loops the centre, the Mei Garden honours the Peking-opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), whose family came from Taizhou, and the old town lanes carry lunch. Back to Gankou by evening.

Yangzhou & Departure

An honest cross-city day and a practical exit — Yangzhou lies about an hour and a half north by road. The Ge Garden of 1818, the Slender West Lake belt and the old town alleys fill a day, and Yangzhou's rail connections carry you onward from there.
