Pagoda, temple & city museum

The octagonal, thirteen-tier brick pagoda rises 70.4 metres, built under the Jin dynasty in the 12th century; the neighbouring temple traces its founding to the Han era and reopened after the 2004 rebuilding, and the museum fills a 1920s merchant courtyard.

The Later Jin capital & the Taizi river

Walk the earthen walls of Dongjingcheng, Nurhaci's capital from 1621 until 1625, when the court moved to Shenyang; the nearby mausoleum holds early Qing princes, and the river keeps the name of Prince Dan of Yan from the 3rd century BC.

Gongchangling springs & the cold-hot ground

Half an hour east to Gongchangling district for mineral hot springs with a resort history reaching back centuries, and the odd hillside where ground temperatures run in reverse — warm in winter, cool in summer — before the HSR back.
