About an hour northeast of town, the Bangdong bank of the Lancang (Mekong) river — Xigui's old-tea gardens climb above the river gorges, and tea-farmer households pour comparisons of spring pickings over lunch.

The road to Cangyuan & Wengding

An honest transfer note — roughly 180 kilometres and three hours southwest into Cangyuan county — for the Wa village of Wengding, its thatched wooden houses rebuilt after a serious fire in February 2021; treat it as a living village, with the county town for the night.

Cliff paintings & the temple

Red-ochre figures and cattle painted across over 10 sites along the Menglai cliffs, commonly estimated at some 3,000 years old, then the Qing-era Guangyun temple in the county town, listed for national protection in 1988; Cangyuan's own airport has flown since 2016 if you fly out.
